NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The City School District of New Rochelle continues to add safety and security measures, now aided by input from a community information meeting that filled the Whitney M. Young Jr. Auditorium in New Rochelle High School.

"I want to assure everyone that the valuable input we gathered will help guide the District as we continue to adopt measures that hold the safety of our students as our top priority," Superintendent Dr. Brian Osborne said after the Tuesday meeting.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Schools across the City School District of New Rochelle recently welcomed a precious gift - free books, donated by My Brother's Keeper. The books were part of a collection drive bounty that Volunteer New York! ran for MBKNewRo during its for 9/11 Day of Service back in 2016.

MBKNewRo, a partnership of the City of New Rochelle and the school district collected enough books to spread reading materials throughout the city, helping to ensure that children and young adults have something to read.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Debbie Minchin follows her passion day in and day out in her role as New Rochelle High School's AP U.S. government teacher, and she encourages her students to do the same.

"I think my students are interesting people," said Minchin, who is marking her 25th year of teaching at the high school. "I'm interested in what they think and why they think as they do. My real passion is helping them find and nurture their current passions and maybe find passions they didn't know they had."

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Approximately 70 students from Isaac E. Young Middle School and Albert Leonard Middle School answered tough quizzes about mountain passes, rivers and state boundaries when they participated in the first round of the 30th annual National Geographic Bee competition, held Jan. 29 and 30. 

Brian Hernandez, an Isaac E. Young Middle School eighth-grader, and Nikhil Mukraj, an Albert Leonard Middle School seventh-grader, won their respective schools' competition and have a chance for a $50,000 college scholarship, should they win the national competition.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- In an effort to expand the Social Studies curriculum to include black history beyond February, Henry Barnard Early Childhood Center students started exploring the topics of slavery and freedom in January, reading about the Underground Railroad and its heroes, and working on two art projects commemorating Harriet Tubman and the enslaved people she helped to seek freedom.

Kindergarteners are creating their own quilt codes, inspired by those used by enslaved people on their flight to freedom, while first-graders are creating a mosaic of Harriet Tubman.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Board of Education Tuesday night accepted the resignation of board member Maddali Atallah. The Board chose not to fill the seat, which was vacated immediately, until the next regularly scheduled school district election on May 15.

When a seat is vacated, state education law provides school boards with three options that allow them to exercise their judgment as to how to best proceed. Options available to the board were:

NEW YORK, NY -- Prices in the New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island area, as measured by the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), edged down 0.2 percent in October after advancing 0.5 percent in September, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Chief Regional Economist Martin Kohli attributed the downturn to lower energy prices. (Data in this report are not seasonally adjusted. Accordingly, month-to-month changes may reflect the impact of seasonal influences.)

The STOP-DWI campaign will include underage drinker enforcement, increased patrols and sobriety checkpoints to deter, identify and arrest impaired drivers. NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The New Rochelle Fire Department responded to a report of an explosion of an MRI Machine at the offices of New Rochelle Radiology at 175 Memorial Highway this afternoon.

An alarm sounded and the building was evacuated. Some patients, still in robes, were kept warm in cars outside.

Deputy Chief John Reed said there were indications the fire may have started in a closet near the MRI Machine but was awaiting a full inspection.

There were no injuries.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle Police are investigating a report of a burglary at 65 Calton Road on Monday afternoon.

The homeowner told police she returned home at around noon and found two teenaged boys in her residence.

The teenagers are believed to be New Rochelle High School students based on information obtained by Talk of the Sound. The District has not released any official statement.

“There was no evidence of forced entry,” said New Rochelle Police Captain Robert Gazzola. "The point of entry is unknown".
