NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Lamont Taylor of New Rochelle recently held two jobs, one working for the City and the other for the School District. After a reader tip to Talk of the Sound, Taylor may soon have neither.

Taylor worked both for the School District’s Buildings and Grounds Department as a Cleaner at Ward Elementary School and for the City of New Rochelle in the Public Works Department’s Sewers and Drains Bureau.

We are writing to share an update that Superintendent Dr. Brian Osborne has informed the Board of Education he wishes not to extend his contract that expires on June 30, 2019 due to personal reasons. It is his intention to remain as superintendent through the 2018-19 school year.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The New Rochelle Board of Education began a formal removal process to terminate another buildings and grounds employee, believed to be the sixth this school year.

The Board voted Tuesday to end the probationary period of Louis Apicella as a Painter-Working Foreman, effective June 15, 2018 as a prelude to his termination and criminal referral for time theft.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Task Force on Reducing Violence in the Lives of Children and Youth completed its work on May 30th when Dr. Jonathon Brice presented their final report to the New Rochelle Board of Education and the New Rochelle City Council.

When the Task Force membership was announced, Talk of the Sound made a Freedom of Information request for the list of applicants. We looked over the applicant list to see how many of those on the Task Force applied to be on the task force.

There are 276 names on the list.

Ward Students Spread Kindness Through Service

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Fourth-grade students at Ward Elementary School took part in two service projects that aimed to help them develop character traits and spread kindness.

Three girls crafted bracelets, packaged them with kind messages, and then sold the bracelets to raise $100. The money was donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Fourth grade language classes at Ward also created posters and collected, organized and donated almost 1,000 pairs of shoes to Soles4Souls, an organization that sends shoes to countries like Haiti, Honduras and Kenya.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle High School choral students know how to get to Carnegie Hall: perform with Director Derrick James.

For 18 years, students lending their voices to NRHS choral groups under James' direction have taken trips to perform in locales as far-flung as China, London, South Africa and the Vatican - as well as the famed Manhattan concert hall. It has also taken them to their own school's Whitney M. Young Jr. Auditorium, the largest venue in New Rochelle, to sing and to receive cheers and standing ovations from their friends, family members and community.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle High School students investigated simulated crime scenes in the woods near their school at the culmination of a yearlong class in forensic science.

Six classes collected evidence from six homicides in Nature Study Woods on Wednesday. More than 140 students examined the scenes of mock crimes just like real world crime scene investigators do. They were tested on the skills they used to collect undisturbed evidence in a systematic way - not on their abilities to solve the crime.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Task Force on Reducing Violence in the Lives of Children and Youth in New Rochelle has completed its work and released a report detailing its 22 recommendations for creating a stronger sense of well-being among children and youth in the New Rochelle community. The recommendations cover four areas: the City School District of New Rochelle; New Rochelle High School; the City of New Rochelle; and Community Resources. Of the 22 recommendations included in its report, the Task Force suggests updates to School District policies and school code of conduct.

Louis Apicella, age 43, of New Rochelle, NY was arrested May 30, 2018 by the New York State Police and charged with

WHITE PLAINS, NY --  Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. announced that 15-year-old Bryan Stamps of New Rochelle has been arraigned as a juvenile offender on charges related to a stabbing at New Rochelle High School January 18, 2018.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle High School science teachers Alan Gardner and Carmen Glenn offered presentations recently at the annual conference of the Bronx-Westchester chapter of the Science Teachers Association of New York State. Gardner’s presentation was on statistical analysis in AP and honors biology class investigations. Glenn’s was on increasing data literacy with local databases on ecological matters such as the Hudson River Environmental Conditions Observing System.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Last November, the Museum of Arts & Culture in New Rochelle High School displayed the works of world-renowned (and New Rochelle-based) 3D pop art master Charles Fazzino.

Now it's the students' turn. The museum is featuring an exhibition of artwork from across the district inspired by Fazzino's distinctive whimsical style.

It's called "Bedazzled by Fazzino," and it's on display through May 9.
