WHITE PLAINS, NY -- Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino announced that the 50th Anniversary Westchester Sports Hall of Fame dinner and ceremony will be held beginning at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Westchester County Center in White Plains.

“I congratulate the inductees for the hard work and dedication that has earned them a place in the Hall of Fame,” Astorino said. “This year we are celebrating the Hall of Fame’s 50th anniversary of recognizing the talent in Westchester that has had such an important impact in advancing sports.”

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- October is Fire Prevention Month, and October 8th – 14th is National Fire Prevention week. This year’s theme - “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!”- reinforces the need for everyone to have an escape plan.  

“Your chance of survival in the case of deadly house fires significantly improves when you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home, especially inside and just outside of bedrooms,” said New Rochelle’s Fire Chief Louis DiMeglio.

WHITE PLAINS, NY --  Westchester District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. who campaigned on a platform to create coordinated drug treatment courts in Westchester County, announced that Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, White Plains and Yonkers are now designated as “Hub” Courts.

 

The “Hub” Court designation will make drug treatment courts accessible to individuals who suffer from alcohol and drug dependency and military veterans who have had run-ins with the law. Their cases can now be transferred to the “Hub” Courts.

Salesian High School in New Rochelle Closed Following Threat by Student

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle Police were called to Salesian High School in New Rochelle Wednesday following a threat to the school made by a student. The school was closed Thursday as a result.

Police sources say the student was removed from the school and sent for evaluation. The school was closed as a precaution.

“Yesterday we were advised that on October 6th one student made a threatening remark to another student,” said NRPD Captain Robert Gazzola. “We are investigating the incident but at this time we do not believe the threat was credible.”

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- It was a sad ending to a tragic situation when a beloved former New Rochelle elementary school administratorl was sentenced to three years probabtion for stealing money.

Sonya Nunez, 45, of Bronxville, NY plead guilty on May 31, 2016 to one count of Petit Larceny. In exchange for her guilty plea and restitution of $4,525, she was promised a sentence of 3 years probation with gambling treatment which was ordered today by Judge Anthony Carbone in New Rochelle City Court. Nunez previously made restitution. She must also pay a $500 fine.

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- John Gallagher, the former Director of Environmental Services for the City School District of New Rochelle, pled guilty before U.S. District Judge Kenneth M. Karas in White Plains federal court to bribery in connection with a scheme to solicit bribes from an outside contractor to channel school district business to the contractor’s company. The guilty plea was accounted by Joon H. Kim, the Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle Firefighters called a second alarm immediately upon arriving at a structure fire at 48 4th Street in New Rochelle’s West End.

The building owner pulled up to his house shortly after 9:30 a.m. with his wife and daughter in his car to find the first and second floor on fire. No one was in the home at the time.

The fire was declared under control 45 minutes later, said Deputy Chief Scott Bradley.

One firefighter suffered a wrist injury, said Bradley.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- A person was stabbed in the head and chest on Saturday evening at about 8 p.m. in what police are describing as a robbery on the first floor of the parking garage about a 100 feet away from the entrance to the outsMarshall's Department Store on Potter Avenue in New Rochelle.

The victim was taken to Jacobi Medical Center. There was no word on the medical condition of the victim.

The suspect, described as a male/black fled to an exit on the far side of the parking garage near where stairs lead out towards the Potter Avenue Bridge.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Monroe College men's rugby team shouldered its first loss of the 2017 campaign on Friday at Vassar College by a score of 30-20.

Vassar took an early 3-0 lead after a penalty at the Mustangs' 22-meter line. Monroe responded with a try by Nedeck Adams, who powered through the Vassar defense. Vassar came back with two well-worked tries of their own.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Three Mustangs claimed spots in the Top 10 to help lead the No. 17-ranked Monroe College women's cross country team to a second-place finish in Saturday's Ted Owen Invitational, hosted by Central Connecticut State University.

Freshman Claudrice McKoy continued her strong rookie campaign, finishing second out of 31 non-Division I (NCAA) runners with a time of 19:42.10. Sophomore Dawnel Collymore was close behind, taking fourth after finishing in 20:33.60. Lethabo Seema earned a seventh-place finish after clocking in at 21:05.90.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The No. 16 Monroe College women's volleyball team split its final two matches at the Florida State College at Jacksonville Tournament on Saturday, defeated Johnson County Community College in three sets before falling in a five-set thriller to No. 9 College of Central Florida. The Mustangs leave the tournament with a 9-4 overall record. They will now head down to Lake City, Fla. to take on Florida Gateway College at 7 p.m. to finish their weekend down south.
