NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- At the Henry Barnard Early Childhood Center, the staff (pictured) and students donned purple on Nov. 16 to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer. The event was first organized at the school several years ago by kindergarten teacher Tara Hernandez in memory of her mother, Gigi Shanes-Hernandez.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Join the New Rochelle High School PAVE art students at 6:30 p.m. this Thursday (11/30) as they open an exhibition of painting, sculpture, drawing and graphics created during the first marking period.

The works include those inspired by their trip to the The New York Botanical Garden to see the famed glass work of Dale Chihuly.

The exhibition will be on display through December in the bridge to House IV in NRHS.

The Nutcracker at New Rochelle High School This Weekend

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Tchaikovsky would be in for a surprise if he attended the performances of The Nutcracker at New Rochelle High School this weekend, featuring some 80 New Rochelle students.

The Ajkun Ballet Theatre has incorporated some hip-hop into the seasonal classic. The students who portray the mice get to show their hip-hop skills, while others perform more traditional ballet moves. The students come mostly from the District elementary schools, with some from Albert Leonard Middle School and the private Thornton-Donovan School.

"If somebody falls, I can help them get back up," said second-grader Krista Arena.

"By returning something that was lost," said her classmate, Matthew Munoz.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- What better way is there to get a sense of the medical professions than to practice CPR on a fake torso, use an ultrasound machine and practice applying sutures?

Hundreds of high school students from lower Westchester - including many from New Rochelle High School - tried their hands at those and other medical procedures last week when NRHS hosted a "Careers in Medicine" fair.

Doyle Center. The Community Baby Shower was designed to help make a difference in the lives of new families, be it through sponsorships, gifts, or donations.

NEW YORK, NY -- The New York State Police will conduct a Thanksgiving holiday traffic enforcement period from Wednesday, November 22, through Sunday, November 26, 2017, in an effort to prevent tragedies caused by impaired, distracted, aggressive or reckless driving.

During this enforcement period, Troopers will be highly visible, and drivers can expect a number of sobriety checkpoints and additional DWI patrols.

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), Aliso Viejo, CA, has again conferred its gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (CCU) at White Plains Hospital. The Hospital is a repeat recipient of the Beacon award; having first received it in 2014, and is the only hospital NICU in New York State to receive a gold-level Beacon Award this year.

Free two-hour holiday parking in municipal lots will be in effect from 9 am to 9 pm beginning Thursday, December 1 through Saturday, December 30. Normal parking regulations will resume on Monday, January 1, 2018.

PELHAM, NY -- The gallery ushers in 2018 with a stunning new portrait exhibition, Near To You. On view will be painting and sculpture by six exciting artists committed to the language and texture of paint and painting as well as challenging approaches to portraiture itself. What does it mean to capture the impression or image of a person? What is it that the viewer recognizes in a portrait? The exhibition will be on view January 19 – March 24, with an opening reception on Friday, January 19, from 6:30 – 8:00 pm. A catalog will be published to accompany the exhibition.
