NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Residents throughout Westchester now can conveniently and safely dispose of their unused medications in a secure dropbox, accessible day or night in nearly every municipality.

The county’s newest dropbox is in New Rochelle, in the lobby at police headquarters, at 475 North Ave. Recently delivered by Westchester County, it was one of 12 purchased last year through an $8,000 grant secured by Sen. Terrence P. Murphy in response to the growing opioid addiction crisis.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- We're looking forward to the Annual Black History Celebration at New Rochelle High School, Feb. 10, presented by the WABSE- Westchester Alliance of Black School Educators and the #NewRochelle Black History Month Committee. 

It is also sponsored by the New Rochelle Fund for Educational Excellence and the New Rochelle Council on the Arts

There will be spoken word, art, face painting, a scavenger hunt and more.

This year's theme is Harriet Tubman.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Kimberly Collins, senior at New Rochelle High School, has been chosen among the nation's best for a weeklong experience in Washington, D.C. She will soon be sitting face-to-face with President Donald Trump as a Senate Youth Scholar.

“I am Vice President of New Rochelle High School, I am also a co-President of Black Culture Club, I'm a co-President of Christian Club, [and] I'm a member of Habitat for Humanity,” says Collins.

Collins does it all. But the most important thing she's learned is that hard work pays off.

They also got to meet the cast, including Tony winner Lea Salonga, a theater icon and the singing voice for two Disney characters. NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Now this is how to end the holiday season at school on a high note!

Here's the New Rochelle High School Chorale and Symphonic Orchestra performing the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah during period 5 today.

The setting - the stacks in House II - was more intimate than the Winterfest Concert in the Whitney Young Auditorium last night. The student singers and musicians brought cheers from their schoolmates and faculty.

Derrick L. James directs the Chorale, Suzanne Morello directs the orchestra.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Good news for indoor stargazers, science buffs and anyone who enjoys a spectacular show: The planetarium at New Rochelle High School is getting an upgrade.

A brand-new Spitz SciDome projector mounted on the wall will project sharper video shows of heavens and vast landscapes in high definition.

"It's going to look bigger and more spectacular because it's going to be crystal clear," said astronomy teacher Bruce Zeller, who runs the planetarium. "It's beautiful."

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Yes, that was New Rochelle High School senior Nicholas Pallotta on the TODAY show recently, helping turn a spotlight on the importance of Meals on Wheels - and offering an example of New Rochelle spirit to a wide audience.

Pallotta's friends told him their relatives from other states called to ask them about the segment.

"It's a very cool experience to think that people around the nation are seeing it," Pallotta said. "I hope there's increased attention to Meals on Wheels, not just in New Rochelle."

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Five inches of snow did not deter the more than 100 chess players who gathered at Columbus Elementary School on Saturday, Dec. 9, to participate in the National Scholastic Chess Foundation Columbus Winter Scholastic. The City School District of New Rochelle was represented by students from Isaac E. Young, Albert Leonard, Columbus, Webster and Ward.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Folding sheets of tinfoil, second-graders at Daniel Webster Magnet School created boats to float in small basins of water, then dropped pennies in one at a time until they sank.

From narrow canoe-like craft to flat-bottomed vessels, the boats helped students discover which designs made the most sense (and held the most cents.)

"We can do more!" Aidan Wigfall said as a boat his group devised took on its 26th penny - the number that had sunk their previous attempt.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Community leaders gathered recently in the annual New Rochelle High School Civics Symposium to debate the hot topics of the day, responding to arguments made by NRHS students.

Five students' papers, filled with substantive research, presented positions on gun control, gerrymandering, political correctness, the question of police bias and the disparate effects of the Drug War on people of color. The issues kept the discussion rolling among the panelists, who had been provided with the papers in advance.

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- County Executive Robert P. Astorino today announced that grants totaling more than $6 million – $2,123,000 annually for 2018, 2019 and 2020 – will be awarded to 34 agencies for 56 at-risk youth programs under Westchester’s Invest-In-Kids program.

“Invest-In-Kids is a vital partnership between Westchester County and our non-profits that responds to the needs of Westchester’s youth,” Astorino said. “I am excited to partner with these 34 agencies to provide essential services with far-reaching, positive results for our at-risk youth population.”

Eight members of the NRPD were recognized at the service. Family and friends were also in attendance to share in this special occasion. This was the last promotional ceremony led by Police Commissioner Patrick Carroll.
