NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The tenth-seeded Iona College women's soccer program advanced to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference quarterfinals in dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon, taking down seventh-seeded Fairfield in penalty kicks.  The Gaels and Stags ended double overtime tied 1-1, and the Maroon & Gold emerged the victor on penalty kicks, 5-4.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle High School senior Angel Bonilla gives back to his community in many ways, including volunteering at the New Rochelle YMCA and tutoring fellow students in math.

Recently, his willingness to help earned him the Milly Kibrick Youth Service Award, a distinction that was given to 10 seniors throughout Westchester by the County Youth Bureau. It is an annual honor given to high school seniors in Westchester who demonstrate leadership in community service.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- More than 200 residents came out to a historic New Rochelle Board of Education meeting this week, held in the Lincoln School Attendance Zone.

The Tuesday meeting was held at the Boys and Girls Club of New Rochelle, Remington Unit, 116 Guion Place, setting the session in the area that was once served by Lincoln Elementary School. The school closed following a landmark 1960 desegregation case, Taylor v. Board of Education of City School District, which found the district had perpetuated a racial imbalance there.

New Webster Singing Group Performs Favorite Songs

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- A new singing group for fourth and fifth graders at the Daniel Webster Magnet School has attracted dozens of students who are having a great time singing their favorite pop and rap songs.

"A lot of my friends like to sing and we thought it would be a fun opportunity to do it with more people," said fifth-grader Caroline Bach, a member of the group.

Vocal music teacher Heidi Jaye, the group leader, said her aim is to focus not so much on the nuts and bolts of scales, keys and so on, but on allowing the students to have fun.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- If you have an idea for a school enrichment program that you'd like the New Rochelle Fund for Educational Excellence to support with its new grant program, there's still time to apply. But not very much.

The deadline is Nov. 15 to apply for the grants that the Fund is making available as one of its 20th year celebrations. Fund Executive Director Andrea Berman said applications are coming in. She has been visiting schools and non-profit groups to discuss the new opportunity.

"Recognizing the difference between achievement gap and opportunity gap has been an important part of our work," said Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Magda Parvey, the District's Chief Academic Officer, at the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, held in the Lincoln Attendance Zone.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Alyssa Dembek, who has taught English at New Rochelle High School for eight years, has been named a 2017 Educator of Excellence by the New York State English Council.

"I try to make English fun for students who don't always love English," Dembek said.

The honorees from across the state are being celebrated today at a luncheon in Albany.

Dembek is known for more than her English lessons. She is also the coach of the varsity volleyball team that has wowed fans with a 16-0 season.

Dembek talks with equal passion about teaching and coaching.

NEW YORK, NY -- Congressman Eliot L. Engel, a top member on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, marked the start of the health insurance open enrollment period by encouraging New Yorkers to explore their insurance options and sign up for coverage.

November 1st marks the start of New York’s health insurance open enrollment period. From now until January 31, 2018, you can purchase a plan or renew your coverage through New York State of Health, the state’s health insurance marketplace. If you sign up by December 15th, you can get coverage that starts on January 1, 2018.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- State Senator George Latimer has lied repeatedly about the registration status of his personal vehicle, a 2015 Jeep, and his illegal use of an unregistered vehicle.

The matter first came to light after Talk of the Sound reported on a previously undisclosed car crash over the summer in New Rochelle and discovered that Latimer’s vehicle registration had been suspended the day after the collision.
