NEW YORK, NY -- Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano today announced his intention to seek the Democratic Party nomination for the 37th State Senate District, which will become vacant January 1st when Senator George Latimer becomes Westchester County Executive.

“We’ve turned Yonkers around during my six years as mayor,” said Spano, adding, “I want to put that record of success and leadership to work for the people of the 37th District.”

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Isaac E. Young Middle School sixth-graders gave retiring New Rochelle Police Commissioner Patrick Carroll their own send-off this week with letters and poems thanking him for all he has done for the community.

(He's third from the left in the photo, holding the plaque.)

Carroll is retiring this month after 24 years running city's police department. He came to New Rochelle in 1993 after a career with the New York City Police Department.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The city school district is halfway through the second of four phases of construction related to a $106.5 million capital improvement plan approved by residents in May 2016.

Much of the completed work and projects underway are exterior repairs, including roof replacement, masonry work, and improving entrances to schools.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- If you missed the TODAY show's great segment on New Rochelle High School senior Nicholas Pallotta and his involvement with Meals on Wheels, here it is!

Watch for shots of Pallotta with the Huguenots football players and with schoolmates marching in New Rochelle's Thanksgiving Parade to support the organization that brings hot meals, and companionship, to those who are unable to purchase or prepare their own.

NRHS Principal Reginald Richardson said it all after seeing the clip: "We are so extremely proud of Nick!"

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The walls of the bridge to House IV in New Rochelle High School are covered with the works of the PAVE art students' first marking period projects.

Drawing inspiration from masters - blown glass artist Dale Chihuly and author Annie Dillard - the student artists created drawings, painted paper, sculpture and digitally enhanced photographs. Students from the three PAVE levels collaborated on the exhibition and held the official opening Thursday evening.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- How often does one get to meet an albino wallaby? The students in the Isaac E. Young Middle School Wildlife Rehabilitators in Training Club have.

Two animal experts stopped by in recent months to introduce the 30-plus club members to the rare, all-white marsupial and a host of other creatures, including pigeons, a hedgehog, several species of monkeys, a chinchilla and a large - and loud - bird from Australia called a kookaburra.

The far-flung friends visited the club with human companions from Animal Nation in Rye and Noah's Park Retreat in Goshen, N.Y.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Fernanda Sofia Ochoa, an Isaac E. Young Middle School eighth-grader, wants to spread the message that everyone is capable of moving beyond any barriers in life.

Known as Sofia, Ochoa became a student in the City School District of New Rochelle after arriving from Mexico last year. Speaking only minimal English, Ochoa learned quickly, has had notable academic achievements and has aspirations to become a doctor or architect.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Nutcracker is an eternal holiday season favorite, and when a performance troupe brings the ballet to New Rochelle High School this weekend, it will include two elements sure to catch residents' attention: several dozen New Rochelle school children as performers - and a dash of hip hop.

"It makes it more exciting," Webster fifth-grader Anna Johnson, one of the performers, said of the modern touch.
