NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New York State Senator George Latimer, the Democrat Party Nominee for Westchester County Executive, was involved in a serious, previously undisclosed car crash in New Rochelle over the summer in the midst of his Democrat Primary Campaign against County Legislator Ken Jenkins.

Latimer was not driving his own vehicle. The Jeep was registered to Andrew G. Genna, 56, of White Plains, NY. New York State Senate Records list Genna as Director of Community Outreach for George Latimer.

In two fourth-grade classes, he read the book "Mr. Ferris and his Wheel," by Kathryn Gibbs Davis, about American invengot George Ferris and the iconic amusement park attraction that bares his name.

The students have set the goal of reading for 1,000,000 minutes in October, and the Book Fairy, along with other teachers and parent volunteers, were there to add encouragement.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Saturday wasn't the first time Jonathan Saddler had heard the message and Monday won't be the first time he heeds it. Still, when New Rochelle coach Lou DiRienzo spoke in the postgame huddle, his words were met with clear eyes and nodding heads.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Davis Elementary School held its Readathon Opening Ceremony last week, launching students on a month-long journey of reading as many minutes as they can.

The event is also a fundraising event for the school's PTA, which supports enrichment programs for the students. 

Principal Anthony Bambrola said students are enthusiastically reading, logging their minutes and enjoying the events planned by the PTA. It is one of three schools holding readathons this month; Jefferson and William B. Ward are the others.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- When the students at Trinity Elementary School returned from summer recess, they couldn't wait to put their school's brand new playground to the recess test. 

The impressively upgraded activity area is situated in Trinity's back courtyard and includes four slides, an array of horizontal and angled monkey bars and rope- and wall-climbing stations, all erected over a rubberized safety surface. Needless to say, the new playground has sparked the imaginations and enthusiasm of Trinity's students.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The sixth-graders at Isaac E. Young Middle School are learning how to recognize, prevent and take action against bullying. These lessons were summed up succinctly by an observation from student Adrian Mendoza:

"Bullying is the wrong thing to do," the 6th-grader in Barbara Sullivan's class said this week.

"It can cause a lot of problems," added his classmate, Cristian Rodriguez.

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- Westchester County effectively managed its sewer district budget by keeping a close eye on expenses, a recent audit by the New York State Comptroller’s Office shows.

Auditors reviewed consecutive sewer district budgets – the county’s $130.7 million budget in 2015 and its $130.3 million budget in 2016 – and determined the County adopted structurally sound budgets and adequately monitored expenses throughout the year.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Despite persistent rain and gusty breezes, over 150 children and parents came out for an afternoon of chess on Columbus Day at the New Rochelle Public Library. The event, produced by the National Scholastic Chess Foundation, featured open play for all ages and abilities, and a simultaneous game where NSCF instructor Ricardo Perez Billinghurst, a National Master, prevailed over 20 challengers from New Rochelle Public Schools.
