NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The search for the next New Rochelle High School principal is under way, and community members have been submitting their thoughts and suggestions about the position in a survey posted earlier this week on the City School District of New Rochelle website, www.nred.org.

The selection process began with 12 candidates chosen from a pool of applicants by Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Magda Parvey and Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Dr. Joseph Williams.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Twenty-four incoming New Rochelle High School ninth graders benefited from a summer program run by the Guidance Center of Westchester and New Rochelle High School Administration.

NRHS House Principal Shomari Akil oversaw the program with a focus on leadership and life skills. In addition to math, English and science, students learned public speaking, effective communication and the importance of treating others with respect. They also learned skills such as how to manage finances.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle's Project SEARCH, a job readiness program for students with developmental challenges, achieved highest honors at the national organization's annual conference in Savannah, Georgia last week. The New Rochelle chapter - Montefiore New Rochelle Project SEARCH - was lauded for reaching a 100 percent success rate with its 2016-2017 class, placing all eight participants in long-term employment.

"We were thrilled to accept the award this year and look forward to achieving more goals in the near future," said project instructor Kathy Barbara.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- In a summer science class, as soon-to-be sixth-graders created towers of straws, cardboard and pins, student Alexandra Fernandes invented one innovative way to keep a ping-pong ball from bouncing out of the container on the top. She folded the flexible sections of straws into a protective roof for the ball. That would be key when her team's tower took its turn on the earthquake machine to see how much shaking it could stand.

That was just one way that the 40 students found to ensure that the small, loosely placed sphere stayed in place.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- F.U.S.E., the local union representing New Rochelle District employees is still sorting out how to respond to the Supreme Court’s Janus decision.

Members of the Federation of United School Employees, the NYSUT-AFT Local 280 in New Rochelle will receive “guidance” from union officials in September on how they may withdraw from the union. For almost all of those members the guidance will come too late for the current 2018-19 school year as members typically sign an enrollment card that states they can only withdraw from F.U.S.E. in the month of August.

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- Tyler Davidson, 38, of New Rochelle was sentenced Tuesday by Acting Supreme Court Judge Susan Cacace to ten years probation for promoting and possessing images of child sexual exploitation. At the time of his arrest in March, Davidson was a special education teacher at Lewis and Clark High School in the Bronx. Davidson has been ordered to surrender his teaching license.
