Alice Walker Enthralls New Rochelle Audience

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- On Wednesday night, the main event in town was at New Rochelle High School where hundreds of audience members in the Whitney M. Young Jr. Auditorium reveled in a visit by author and activist Alice Walker.

The literary giant best known for her 1982 Pulitzer prize-winning novel The Color Purple offered her wisdom and observations on facing racism, the Spielberg-directed movie adaptation of her famous book, environmentalism and more. She also gave advice on writing.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Community members will have a chance to ask questions of Interim Superintendent Dr. Magda Parvey at the Board of Education's next Town Hall meeting, 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22.

The session will be open to the public and will be held in the Linda E. Kelly Theater at New Rochelle High School, near the entrance off North and Braemar avenues. This will be the second in a new series of meetings that the Board has initiated with the community to hear and respond to questions from parents, students and others.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Across the City School District of New Rochelle, students and teachers are planting seedlings that will, in the coming years, grow into Colorado blue spruce trees.

About 100 of the seedlings came to the schools from the City of New Rochelle, which had distributed more of them at its recent annual Street Fair downtown. Over time, the Picea pungens that are planted and tended to will grow into full-bodied conifers with a silvery blue-green look.

Pair guilty on Car Thefts and Identity Fraud

 

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- Two Bronx men pleaded guilty to ripping off a Westchester car dealership owned by Yankee great Mariano Rivera.

The pair ran a complex identity fraud scheme that allowed them to fraudulently “purchase” and take possession of vehicles, mostly high-end, at car dealerships throughout Westchester by using the personal identifying information and credit of their victims.
