Softball Splits a Pair at Siena

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Iona College softball team was pinned up against the Siena College Saints on Friday afternoon.  The two teams near atop the Metro Atlantic Athletic Standings split a pair of contests, each coming out of the weekend with a 6-2 league record.

GAME ONE: Siena 5, Iona 3 (9 Innings)

Despite a late two-run homerun by senior centerfielder Kelsey Long, the Maroon & Gold dropped game one 5-3 in a back-and-forth nine inning affair.  Siena was able to walk-off courtesy of a two-run round-tripper from freshman Lauren Sabihon.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Iona Women’s Lacrosse program lost a hard-fought double-overtime contest to the Manhattan Jaspers Wednesday night. The host scored the game-winner 41 seconds into the second period to down the Gaels.

Sophomore Libby Miller, junior Pamela Giordano and senior Erin Pugh led the Maroon & Gold with two  goals each. Sophomore Maureen Murphy, junior Kaitlyn Becker and senior Grace Celona each tallied one goal in the contest. In net, sophomore Shannon McCaffrey played the entirety, collected 12 saves.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Finishing up the regular season at home today, the Iona College women’s water polo team split two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matches with a 18-5 morning win over LaSalle University and a 10-9 afternoon loss to Virginia Military Institute at Hynes Pool.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Sophomore Alana Evans continued her dominance in the circle for the Maroon & Gold with the program’s first no-hitter since 2010.  Her ten strikeout complete game gem, insured the Gaels split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader against Monmouth.

GAME ONE: Monmouth 5, Iona 0

Junior Amanda Riley was on her A-game for Monmouth, showing her All-MAAC Preseason selection traits while holding Iona to four hits in seven innings of work.  Seven Gaels fell by way of the strikeout while just two reaching base on free passes.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- A solid pitching effort coupled with timely hitting led the Iona baseball program to a 2-1 victory this afternoon to close out a weekend series with MAAC rival Quinnipiac. The Gaels (12-13, 5-4 MAAC) claimed the series victory two games to one.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Monroe College Softball team faced tough competition over the weekend, falling to Mercer County College and Brookdale Community College in doubleheaders. They were ahead in their second game against the latter, 7-6, when the umpire suspended the game.

Mercer County proved a strong competitor as they beat the Mustangs 12-0 in their first game and 4-1 in the second. Kylie Bitz struck out six in game two. She allowed just three earned runs. Gabrielle Placencia hit a solo homerun to account for the Mustangs only run in the doubleheader.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Monroe College Baseball team fell to ASA College in a doubleheader held over the weekend by scores of 7-4 and 6-5. The team is now 12-15 for the year.

Game one saw Antonio Frias get the start for Monroe. The Panamanian freshman entered the game looking to improve to 2-3 on the year. The southpaw pitched just over three innings, striking out six and surrendering just one earned run.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The College of New Rochelle softball team dropped a pair of contests to Bay Path University on Friday.  The Blue Angels fell 7-2 and 6-2 to the host Wildcats.  With the losses CNR fell to 8-4, while Bay Path climbed above .500 at 12-11 overall.

CNR sophomore pitcher Victoria Rivera (Bronx, NY) suffered her first loss of the year and is now 7-1 overall.  She struck out five and allowed only three earned runs. Freshmen Emily Perez (Queens, NY) took the loss in game two for CNR.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- A ninth inning rally fell short for the Iona College baseball program this afternoon at Lehigh as the hosts earned a 7-5 non-conference victory.

Trailing 7-4 heading into the ninth inning, the Gaels scored on a RBI double from Joe DeMaio and later loaded the bases with two outs and trailing 7-5. However, a final ground out from Lehigh (12-24) pitcher Sam Ashley earned the victory for Mountain Hawks.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Iona College softball program was unable to climb out of an early deficit on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Stony Brook Seawolves in its final non-conference game of the 2017 spring season, 7-4.  In the defeat, senior first basemen Kristen Turner took another step climbing the Gael record book.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Iona College golf team moved up two spots on the final day of the Rhode Island Invitational, placing 11th among 14 competing schools.  The Gaels shot 304 (+16) in round three, led by sophomore Devin Delisle’s 75 (+3).  They finished the three-round tournament with a scorecard of 929 (+65).

The host Rhode Island won the event at 876 (+12), and Bryant University student-athlete Ryan Tombs took the individual crown with a three-round total of 215 (-1).

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Iona College lacrosse team dropped its fifth MAAC game of the season Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 13-9 contest at Fairfield.  The Stags used a 16-to-8 draw control advantage to control the tempo and counteract junior Pamela Giordano’s game-high four goals.

Fairfield and Iona battled back and forth in the first half, trading goals until the Stags closed the opening frame scoring three of the final four.  The Gaels trailed 7-4 at halftime and were constantly against the grain being outshot 13-8 overall, and 10-7 shots on goal.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- A pair of home runs from Michael Crispino and Adonis Garcia helped the Monroe College Baseball team defeat Westchester Community College, 12-1, on Monday. Monroe used a seven-run second inning to pull away from the Vikings.

Westchester struck first, getting a run off of Monroe starter Joel Urena, in the first inning. A leadoff double, a single, and a sacrifice fly accounted for the Westchester run. Urena settled down after that, not allowing another run and striking out six in five innings of work. He earned the win and improved to 2-1 on the year.
