Women's Volleyball Legacy Continues With Fifth Straight Championship

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The College of New Rochelle hosted the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's volleyball championships on Saturday, November 4 at the Wellness Center. The CNR Blue Angels were regular season champions and entered the tournament as the one seed. CNR defeated Pratt, No. 3 seed, in straight sets to claim the 2017 HVIAC women's volleyball championship. 

This win was the fifth-straight HVIAC title for the Blue Angels. The team did not drop a set during the regular season conference play or in the championships.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The women's swim team took on St. Joe's Brooklyn and St. Joe's Long Island on Saturday afternoon at The College of New Rochelle's Wellness Center. It was their first home tri-meet of the season. The women earned a win over St. Joe's Brooklyn by a single point, but fell to St. Joe's Long Island to bring their overall record to 2 - 2. 

Sophomore Chloe Wang picked up two victories on the day in the 100yd Breaststroke and the 100 Individual Medley. Wang recorded season best times in both races.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The men's swim team picked up right where it left off, defeating St. Joe's Brooklyn on Saturday, November 4 to remain undefeated on the season and improve their record to 3 - 0. The Blue Angels did so in convincing fashion, winning every event that was contested on the afternoon.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The College of New Rochelle women's soccer team persevered through their inaugural season. They had some tough battles and circumstances to face in the beginning of the season, but the Blue Angels pulled together and had an outstanding performance for their first year. Captain Maria Alejandra Estupinan (Cali, Colombia) shared her thoughts on the past season by saying, "I am really proud of everyone and how far they have come and for sticking through with the season through all the challenges."

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Iona College men's and women's swimming & diving team hosted Monmouth on Friday afternoon in their final home meet of the fall semester.

The Gaels, swimming their first of two meets in a home-and-away format, came away with a pair of victories. The Iona men rolled to 171-100 win as the women fought hard for a 164-110 victory.

On the men's side, there were 13 individual victories from nine individuals.  The Gaels also fought to take both relay races.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- William B. Ward Elementary School students took a trip to Manhattan and into a musical world of make-believe when they saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on Broadway this week.

With more than 190 students and 25 adults, Wednesday's mid-day trip to the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre was the largest of the school's annual visits to the theatre district in recent memory, said fifth-grade teacher Jonathan Fox, who has participated in the event for the past seven years.

On past trips, students have seen Aladdin, Annie, Matilda the Musical, and others.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- A second half surge fell just short tonight's for the Iona College men's basketball team in the 2017-18 season opener with a 69-67 setback at the University of Albany.

After trailing 34-23 at halftime, the Gaels (0-1) rallied to outscore the Great Danes (1-0) 44-35 in the second period. The Maroon & Gold opened the second half with a 15-4 run to tie the game at 38 following a Zach Lewis layup with just over five minutes gone by.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Iona College women's basketball team dropped its season-opener at the University of Arizona on Friday afternoon by a final score of 71-58.  Junior All-MAAC Preseason First Team honoree Alexis Lewis and freshman Toyosi Abiola combined for 41 points.  Lewis begins the season with her 12th career double-double.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Two freshmen were among the three from the Iona College women's cross country team to earn All-Region today as the Gaels earned sixth place at the NCAA Northeast Regional Meet in Buffalo.

Egle Morenaite, the 2017 MAAC Women's Individual Champion, led the effort for Iona with a seventh place showing behind a 21:55.8 showing. Morenaite opened the first mile with a 5:45.1 time to cross in at 16th before moving up to fifth place following the 3k mark at 10:441. She finished the final half of the race in 11:11.7 to claim the All-Region nod in seventh place.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Behind an eighth-place performance from Alex Masai, the Monroe Mustangs men's cross country team finished 14th out of 44 teams at the NJCAA National Championships on Saturday in frigid temperatures in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

The men's 14th place finish was 16 spots better than their 2016 finish.

Masai's eighth-place finish out of 300 total runners clocked in a time of 25:17.2, and is the highest individual finish in men's program history at the NJCAA National Championship. His eighth-place finish also earned him All-American status.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Led by the 2017 Atlantic Region Female Athlete of the Year Claudrice McKoy, the Monroe Mustangs women's cross country team finished 23rd at the NJCAA National Championships, the second-highest team finish in the program history.

Mckoy clocked a time of 20:09.3, finishing 82nd overall. Right behind her was Lethabo Seema, who finished with a time of 20:22.6.

Coming in third for the Mustangs was Dawnel Collymore who came in with a time of 20:45.2.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Monroe Mustangs men's basketball team pulled out a 106-94 win over Manor College on Saturday to finish undefeated in the Monroe College Classic and move to 2-0 on the season.

Behind Damont Kearse' 13 first half points, the Mustangs raced out to a double-digit lead over the Manor College Blue Jays midway through the first quarter. The Mustangs led by as many as 26 points with 3:25 to play before Manor went on a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 17.

The Mustangs improve to 2-1 on the year, while the Hawks fall to 4-1 with their first loss.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The College of New Rochelle women's volleyball team traveled to Georgetown, TX for the NCAA III 2017 Women's Volleyball Championships Georgetown Regional at Southwestern University on Thursday, November 9. The Blue Angels would take on the Colorado College Tigers on Friday, November 10. The Tigers, the number one team in the regional bracket and NCAA III, were 31 - 1 on their season. CNR finished up their regular season at 20 - 10. The team would fall to Colorado College in three close sets, 17 - 25, 20 - 25 and 17 - 25.

In the process, the Gaels (14-17, 11-7 MAAC) have earned the third seed in the upcoming MAAC Championship and will face sixth seeded Quinnipiac at 5:00 pm on Friday, November 17 at Fairfield University.
