NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Iona College hosted its fourth SEMI-Annual Honors Reception on Tuesday night, November 15, at the Paley Center for Media in Midtown Manhattan. The event celebrated Iona alumni working in or connected to the sports, entertainment and media industry (SEMI).  As part of the program, Iona announced a $50,000 gift from AT&T New York as the first underwriter for the program.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- A group of 16 students from Albert Leonard and Isaac E. Young middle schools recently attended the Second Annual Human Rights Institute for Middle School Student Leaders at the Yonkers Public Library. Students who attended the workshop plan to teach their classmates the important lessons they learned.

If so, mark your calendar for SEPTA's meeting on Monday, November 14 featuring speaker Leslie Josel, founder of "Order Out of Chaos." Her presentation will offer a look at essential skills for planning and prioritizing, explain why students procrastinate, and offer real solutions to address the problem. The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the New Rochelle High School library.

All are welcome to the viewing which will take place Wednesday, Nov. 16, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Whitney Young Auditorium in New Rochelle High School. National Honor Society Brings Sandwiches to Soup Kitchen

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The kickoff project for the National Honor Society this year was a sandwich brigade in which 25 students made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and delivered 300 of them to the Hope Soup Kitchen.

Each year the National Honor Society does several small and one large project together as a group in addition to the hours individual students spend volunteering.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The boys soccer team defeated Ithaca High School 3-0 in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association's regional semifinal match yesterday. The team faces Newburgh Free Academy on Saturday in the regional finals. This contest will take place at Middletown High School at 3 p.m.

The varsity football team will play Scarsdale High School on Saturday in the Section I championship. The game will take place at Mahopac High School and kick off is at noon.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle High School's Donald Baughman Museum of Arts and Culture premiered a new exhibit on Thursday: "Anne Frank: A History of Today."

The traveling exhibit, which features journal entries and photographs of the German-born Holocaust victim and her family, is curated by the Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect.

Students from New Rochelle High School were trained by the Center, and will be responsible for giving tours to visitors of the exhibit.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Webster Elementary School celebrated Halloween with a parade and classroom parties on October 31st.

Students dressed in costumes. Fourth-grade teachers wore matching T-shirts that said, "I TEACH. What's your superpower?" First-grade teachers dressed as rock, paper and scissors. Parents lined the parade route along Glenmore and Calhoun avenues. 

Students, staff and family members enjoyed classroom Halloween parties.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The City School District of New Rochelle will host a screening of the documentary, "Beyond Measure," on Wednesday, Nov. 16, at New Rochelle High School.

Director Vicki Abeles was a Wall Street attorney before receiving critical acclaim for her co-direction of the 2007 documentary "Race to Nowhere," which illuminates "the pressure-cooker culture dominating America's schools."

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Renowned artist, writer and New Rochelle High School graduate Ted Meyer was recently interviewed by the National Endowment for the Arts. The interview transcript was published on Oct. 27.

Currently an artist-in-residence at the UCLA Geffen School of Medicine, Meyer has worked for 16 years on a project combining art and medicine. "Scarred for Life: Mono-prints of Human Scars" features people who have lived through life-altering accidents and health crises.

Boys' Varsity Soccer Team wins Section I championship

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Boys' Varsity Soccer Team won the Section I championship Saturday by defeating Arlington High School 3-0. 

The contest, which took place at Lakeland High School, was the team's first Section championship since 1996.  All the goals were made in the first half of the game, with Cristian Valencia scoring two goals and Leonardo Vargas one.

Omar Espinoza had two assists, and Harwan Alzuabidi helped with the other goal. The New Rochelle defense did not allow Arlington to take a shot on goal.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Eighth graders at Albert Leonard Middle School heard from members of the New Rochelle High School's Students Against Drunk Driving group Thursday.

The talk was part of Red Ribbon Week, which ran from Oct. 24 to Oct. 31. The theme this year was: YOLO: Be Drug Free.
