NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Tiara Reyes-Vega, the former Executive Director of Language Acquisition for the Yonkers Public Schools, has been named Director of Instructional Support for the New Rochelle school district. She was appointed to the post on June 6 by the New Rochelle Board of Education.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Gustavo Barbosa, who has served 13 years as a house principal in New Rochelle High School, has been named the new Secondary School Social Studies Chairperson. The New Rochelle Board of Education appointed him to the post on June 6.

In his new position, Barbosa will oversee social studies curriculum spanning grades 6 through 12, in the high school and the two middle schools, ensuring that instructional standards are being implemented. He will also be responsible for evaluating social studies teachers and making sure that they are using best practices.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The College of New Rochelle today announced the firing of 32 faculty, staff and administrators. Among them Elaine White, Vice President of Student Services and Barabara Paterno, former secretary of past-President Judith Huntington.

The news was alluded to in a letter to the CNR Community from Dr. Dorothy A. Escribano, Interim President and Provost & Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- In 2016, New Rochelle High School (NRHS) announced that it raised its graduation rates from 78% in 2008 to 86% in 2016. This was an important accomplishment for NRHS, especially since Hispanic students broke the 80-percentile mark for the first time with the most recent graduating class. Hispanic students are the largest demographic at the school, and have a lower graduation rate and higher dropout rate than other students.

I would like to thank all the people that voted for me and gave me their support. Every word and form of communication used on my behalf are appreciated, and not taken for granted. As a first time candidate in any type of election, I experienced a small sample of the inner workings of politics as a school board candidate. NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- William B. Ward Elementary School hosted a National Scholastic Chess Foundation Grand Prix tournament on Saturday, April 22, that attracted more than 100 students from across the district, and from schools in Westchester County and Connecticut.

Students from Ward, Columbus, Davis, Webster and Albert Leonard Middle School took part in the competition that is run by the National Scholastic Chess Foundation based in White Plains.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- High school teacher Darren Gurney donated a collotype of Norman Rockwell's iconic painting "The Problem We All Live With" to the district at Tuesday's Board of Education meeting on behalf of his father, Clark Gurney, a longtime city resident.

The painting will be permanently displayed at New Rochelle High School.

Clark Gurney has lived in the same home in New Rochelle for the past 50 years. Both of his sons went to NRHS, and he's been a huge supporter of the school's baseball team over the years.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Davis Elementary held its first Daddy-Daughter Dance last month, attracting dozens of families and bringing fun and excitement to the school community.

Approximately 180 girls participated in the dance that was held in the school gym last Friday. Balloons and streamers adorned the venue, a DJ played music, and pizzas, heroes and snacks were served.

A photo booth was set up for daddy-daughter pictures.

Families, students, former students, teachers, custodial staff and administrators worked together to get the area around Amy's Greenhouse ready for the annual Mother's Day Plant Sale and Fair, which will be held on May 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
