Davis First Graders Focus on Math Talk

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- At least once a week, Brittnee Sabatino and her grade colleagues set aside time to work on how they can improve the quality of student learning.

As a first-grade teacher, Sabatino's focus for most of January and February is to elevate the quality of "math talk" - the standard of speaking and listening on math topics, and effectively critiquing the reasoning of others.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle High School visual arts students participated in the regional Mamaroneck Artists' Guild program, "2017 Young Artists on the Rise" and were honored at a reception at the MAG Gallery in Larchmont on Feb. 1.

The show was on display from Jan. 25 through Feb. 4.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Not many students write to the president of the United States, and even fewer hear back from him. New Rochelle High School senior Alyssa Purrier is delighted to be in both groups.

It was a regular October day in Carol Donnelly's computer apps class for grades 10 through 12, and students were learning how to use the Microsoft Office Suite and write a business letter.

Some students wanted to write to a real person. Donnelly thought it was a good idea that would make them excited about the class. She suggested writing to a famous person.

The "Healthy New Rochelle Fit Challenge," which launched Feb. 1 and concludes in May with a community health fair, is offering participants useful tools to make positive healthy lifestyle changes.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- At a recent workshop, Spanish-speaking parents of Davis Elementary students learned to replicate the reading style of teachers so that they could read to their children at home. The effort was such a success that a second workshop is planned for this school year.
