NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The National Day of Service and Remembrance has passed, but the good deed that one class at Isaac E. Young Middle School has taken on is far from over.

The students in Mary Monteleone's 8th-grade English class started a food drive first by collecting extra canned goods from their homes. By mid-week, several had taken their lunch period to create food drive signs with colored markers to hang in the hallways.

"For them to give up their lunch to make the posters is a nice gesture," Monteleone said.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle High School business teacher Robert Thompson originally planned on a career in advertising. But his thoughts turned to teaching in an instant one day when he was serving as a counselor at Camp Quarropas in White Plains while in college.

A painfully shy boy who Thompson had been talking with for weeks hugged him while leaving the camp and thanked Thompson for being his best friend there.

"I wouldn't be here if that moment hadn't happened," Thompson said this week, in his classroom lined with computers.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Artworks depicting swimming and seances may seem to be an odd combination to share exhibition space in a museum. But in the kick-off exhibit for the Museum of Arts and Culture's 2017-18 season, they share plenty more - namely, the artist.

Jane Zweibel, a Brooklyn-based artist who spent most of her childhood and teen years in New Rochelle, is presenting her works in the New Rochelle Fund for Educational Excellence's Museum of Arts and Culture in New Rochelle High School. A reception was held Thursday evening for the exhibition, which runs through October 12.
