Con Edison

August 31, 2008 - 00:02

Many of you have experienced the unacceptably too often experience of the loss of electrical power. While Con Ed claims that many of these outages are unavoidable, such a response is unacceptable. With the monopoly granted to it, comes the responsibility of providing uninterrupted reliable service. I am working with Councilmember Marianne Sussman of District 6 to lobby the Public Service Commission to condition any further rate increases to Con Ed on the provision of adequate service and the investment in the infrastructure to assure that these outages are not repeated. It is no small challenge to pressure Con Ed to address these issues, but we will continue to press the utility until these concerns are adequately addressed.

McMansions

August 31, 2008 - 00:02

In my last newsletter, I reported that I was exploring ways of addressing the issue of overdevelopment in our residential neighborhoods in the form of what are commonly known as McMansions – the construction of gargantuan houses, which are out of character with the neighborhood. Through my efforts, I am pleased to report that the Department of Development has offered a proposal to limit such overdevelopment. Public hearings have been scheduled on this proposed legislation and I welcome your input on this important issue. While I respect a property owner’s right to improve his or her property, the preservation of the character and quality of our neighborhoods is of prime importance.

Ice Rink

August 31, 2008 - 00:02

Given the recent announcement that New Roc City will undergo extensive renovation to allow Target and Kohl’s to become new tenants, the ice rink will probably cease operations later this year. As a result, there is a desperate need for a new facility to provide this valuable recreational and athletic opportunity for our community. As a member of the ice rink committee in the over a decade ago, I was instrumental in the establishment of the ice rink in New Roc City. I am also committed to finding a suitable location for the placement of an ice rink in New Rochelle to assure that our youth will be able to enjoy the important recreational and athletic opportunities that such a facility will provide. I am optimistic that working together, we can be sure that there will be no undue disruption of our youth and school programs.

Neighborhood Traffic

August 31, 2008 - 00:01

Traffic concerns are a perennial issue that draws attention from throughout New Rochelle. From Paine and Forest Heights to the East End, to Larchmont Woods, and other neighborhoods throughout District 5, speeding cars in quiet residential neighborhoods is a chronic issue. The recently enacted Traffic Calming Program, of which I was one of the key sponsors, is a good first step towards addressing this problem. One of the first areas to be awarded a grant to ease traffic concerns is Paine Avenue and this project should come to fruition later this spring. If you are concerned about speeding traffic in your neighborhood, please contact the Department of Public Works 654-2130 for an application to participate in this program.

Greetings from Barry Fertel

Dear Resident of District 5:

While New Rochelle’s future looks bright, we must strike a balance between preserving our residential neighborhoods and responsible development in our downtown. The challenge of providing the essential city services and assuring the preservation of our quality of life must be met with thoughtful planning and response to community needs. Neighborhood traffic, preventing neighborhood overdevelopment, easing traffic congestion on North Avenue, providing adequate recreational opportunities for our youth, and continuing to make available the essential municipal services are all issues that require focus and commitment. I have tried to highlight some of those issues.

If you have any comments, questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or 914-740-4346.

Sincerely,

Barry R. Fertel
New Rochelle City Council District 5
