Keep Costs Down - Keeping Parents Away from the CSE

The best way for the DoSE to achieve its primary mission to reduce costs of special education to the District is to be passive. Even thought it is supposed to do so, the Special Education department does not pro-actively identify eligible children within the community. In fact, the trend is moving in the opposite direction. Other than some half-hearted, bare-minimum effort like running tiny classified ads in the Journal News, there is no serious outreach program in the community.

Burrows: Reassess Property in Westchester Now!

Westchester County Legislator Gordon A. Burrows (R/Yonkers, Bronxville) proposes that Westchester County conduct a county re-valuation of all real estate in the golden apple. Burrows has added the following item to the agenda for the county board’s meeting of May 19:

    Legislation Proposes Eminent Domain Reform

    “Government should not take private property unless it is necessary to meet a real public need, not just because it prefers one use over another or one developer over another,” said County Legislator Thomas J. Abinanti (D, I, WF-Greenburgh) as he and County Legislator James Maisano (R-New Rochelle) reintroduced legislation that would limit the County’s power to condemn private property.

    The Republican Conference calls upon Chief Advisor to the Chair of the Board Gary Kriss, to take an immediate unpaid leave of absence. In light of recent developments regarding unaccounted and questionable spending practices, an investigation has begun by the District Attorney. Until the DA completes the investigation, Mr. Kriss should remain on unpaid leave. Upon completion of such investigation further action may be demanded by the Conference.

    Committee Re-Releases Legislation Prohibiting Underage Drinking Parties in Westchester Homes

    The Legislation Committee of the County Board of Legislators met today to discuss final revisions to a local law aimed at prohibiting and establishing fines for anyone organizing, hosting or knowingly allowing an event where minors are present and consume alcohol.

    The “Social Host Law” appeared before the full Board at its June 16, 2008 meeting, where it was recommitted by Majority Leader Marty Rogowsky (D-IN-WF, Harrison). The item had been on the agenda for a public hearing as well as a vote by all seventeen members.

    Minority Caucus maintains purchase of flawed Ardsley building to store voting machines is a mistake

    Minority Leader George Oros (R/Cortlandt) and Legislators Gordon A. Burrows (R/Yonkers) and Jim Maisano (R/New Rochelle) criticized the Spano administration and the majority of their colleagues on the Board of Legislators for pushing through the purchase of a dilapidated building in Ardsley to store voting machines and to house the Department of Public Safety. Oros, Burrows, and Maisano argue the building is too expensive. They also point out the seller is politically connected.

    Legislators Maisano and Pinto Announce Passage of Social Host Law

    Legislators Jim Maisano (R/New Rochelle) and Vito Pinto (D/Eastchester) are pleased to announce the passage last night of the “Social Host Law,” which they introduced earlier this year to help combat underage drinking in Westchester County.

    The law, which the Board of Legislators approved by a vote of 15-1 and takes effect immediately, penalizes any adult that hosts or knowingly allows a party where alcoholic beverages are consumed by minors.
