It has been reported that on Thursday March 26th, 2009 a male 8th grader from Isaac E. Young Middle School, was pushed from behind as he walked away as well as slapped in the face several times by a female Security Guard at the school. The incident occurred on the top floor of the middle school, sometime after 10:30 AM. It all occurred in a main hallway, in the presence of other students. We understand that the boy was interviewed extensively by the Isaac E. Young Middle School Administration regarding the incident. We also understand that some video is available on the school camera security system and that a police complaint has been filed by the parent.

In an interview with the parent and child, we were told the following:

Councilman St. Paul: Improvements are Still Needed

Councilman Richard St. Paul (D. 4) addressed development initiatives in New Rochelle at his community district meeting on March 24.  He claimed Target and Kohls slated for New Roc are waiting for financing.  Other future plans for the City of New Rochelle are 50 story buildings including a hotel and residential units for Le Count Square. The North Avenue study being completed will assess 9, 7, 5 or 3 story buildings for that corridor.   Cameras in downtown and upgrading of the Church-Division parking lot are also needed.

When items for the stimulus plan such as moving the city yard were brought up, Chuck Strome, New Rochelle City Manager, claimed it was a "wish list" that had been submitted to the state.  He continued by saying 75% of the city budget was for staffing and "75% of that 75% is for police, fire and sanitation departments."

Brian Sussman, a Democratic district leader that attended the meeting, expressed concern about the people who pay taxes.  He felt new housing units would be appropriate on the grounds of Wykagyl Country Club.

Friday Fun: What's Wrong with This Picture?

image1023813817.jpgThis one is just toooo easy. You are looking at the back of a t-shirt distributed by teachers in the Health Department at New Rochelle High School as part of Fitness Week. Notice anything odd about the sponsors? Apparently the high school's idea of fitness is chowing down on buffalo wings, pizza and jerked chicken followed up by a fine cigar. And in these tough financial times, it's nice to see the school helping our kid's find a cheap place to pick up a carton of Lucky Strikes at "Smokes 4 Less".

Facing Taxpayer Backlash, New Rochelle School Board Orders Superintendent to Cut 2009-10 Spending Plans

March 27, 2009 - 18:35

Sources close to the ongoing budget discussions within the New Rochelle School District have told Talk of the Sound that the School Board has ordered Schools Superintendent Richard Organisciak to get out his carving knife and start making cuts to his proposed $8 million spending increase in the wake of widespread anger over the District's proposed $230 million budget which many believe will come with a 6.9% tax increase -- possibly higher.

In what was described as an animated, heated discussion, school board members made clear they expect the district to take a hard line on district spending and in instructions given to the district's three-person labor negotiations team; Assistant Superintendents John Quinn and Peg Pecunia and Le Fantôme de l'board, sometimes known as Jeffrey Kehl, the outside counsel for the school district. Some Board members who initially supported the District's 3.75% budget increase have now withdrawn that support as they have come to recognize the depth of concern among voters over increased property taxes at a time when more Americans are out of work that any time in U.S. history.

MacMenamin's Trustee Denies "$150,000 Deal" with Jimmy Rodriquez and Don Coqui Restaurant Group

Robert L. Geltzer the Chapter 11 Trustee for MacMenamin's Grill has denied claims published in the Journal News that he had pledged to allow the restaurant to continue to operate "if Jimmy Rodriguez, the head of the restaurant group, could produce $150,000 by the next day."

Last week, Ricardo Oquendo, the lawyer representing Don Coqui Restaurant Group, claimed in an email to Geltzer told Allan Drury of the Journal News that Geltzer had informed another Don Coqui lawyer that if Jimmy Rodriguez came up with $150,000 the same day, he would permit the restaurant to remain open for the coming weekend. Oquendo says he came up with the money the following day but Geltzer reneged on the deal. The email was made available to Allan Drury of the Journal News who reported on the exchange last week.

Peter A. Zisser of Squire, Sanders & Dempsey, the law firm which represents Mr Geltzer absolutely denies Mr. Oquendo's characterization of discussions between Geltzer and representatives of Don Coqui Restaurant Group, telling Talk of the Sound:

...with respect to Mr. Oquendo's comments, at no time did the Trustee agree to keep the restaurant open in exchange for a cash payment from Mr. Rodriguez.
