CNN Comes to New Rochelle to Cover Chrysler Bankruptcy

May 06, 2009 - 12:49

Last week CNN parked a large truck on Route 1 in New Rochelle, in front of our local Chrysler dealer. CNN's Richard Roth did live shots throughout the day - before and after President Obama spoke about the Chrysler Bankruptcy.

Although they say they are in Larchmont, the dealership is actually on the border and the truck was parked in New Rochelle.

The Vulgar Block Party

Saturdays, little league, ice cream, block parties. As we walked to the ball field at Isaac Young, we passed a block party being held in the parking lot of the school. The kids were excited to see a fire engine and it's crew, displays were lined up music playing. Did I say music? It might have been nice to partake in the festivities were it not for the music. What kid doesn't like to climb aboard a fire truck and pretend, if only for a moment, they are the heroes of the day? Oh yeah, the music. As we walked towards the party, we were greeted by an onslaught of horrible perjoratives mostly of the "N" word type. "M$th%^er F#$%in Ni$%#er seemed to be a common phrase along with M#$%& F&*(% ho's,and the graphic descriptions of the singers sexual prowess. Does this offend anyone anymore? Free speech is great, but within context. On the field next to the party were lacrosse games, baseball games with 5 to 10 year olds, a lot of them with their younger siblings. I'm not even comfortable writing the words, and I bet if I did somebody would take issue with it. This wasn't a concert or private party, it was out in public where you had no choice except to leave. I pay the little league for my kids to play, I pay school taxes so these facilities can operate, and I'm left explaining to a 6 and 4 year old why adults allow this kind of behavior. Shame on them.

The New Rochelle Armory is still standing and the Save Our Armory Committee (SOA) is continuing to contact Albany and the Attorney General about the deed to the Armory.  The City of New Rochelle was given the Armory with specific guidelines which stated it was to be used for community purposes.  Several members of the SOA committee at their April 27 meeting suggested that Councilman Lou Trangucci be asked  to place a discussion about the Armory on the City Council agenda.  Jim Murphy noted that if this Armory was destroyed, the only building left for veterans in the city would be the American Legion Post 8 building.

Your Taxes Going Way Up - Jump in Tax Appeals to Trigger Massive Increase in School Taxes

The New Rochelle School District admitted last week at a public meeting at the New Rochelle Public Library that no effort has been made by the district to forecast the impact of lower housing prices on tax appeals which, in turn, will likely drive a large descrease in the assessed value of property in New Rochelle. All of which means that in order to fund the $230 mm budget the District hopes to pass on May 19th, school taxes will have to increase two or three times more than the District has claimed.

In March when the New Rochelle School Board held it’s “Budget Workshops” the vast majority of discussion and debate centered on the spending side of the school budget. When the revised budget was released on April 21st the administration and board decided to institute minimal cuts in spending. I was disappointed that a more aggressive effort to reduce spending was not made. I know that many other New Rochelle residents shared this view. However, it was not the spending side of the budget that was my primary concern. As the parent of two children about to enter the school system, the last thing I would want to encourage is cuts in necessary educational spending. It was the revenue side of the budget that concerned me.
