Happy Ending for Downtown New Rochelle Lingerie Merchant

July 14, 2009 - 16:12

Aman Ali and the Journal News got results with a story about a mean-spirited greedy landlord who was forcing out a long-time merchant in downtown New Rochelle to make way for yet another cell phone store along Main Street. Or, the property owner was pressured by sympathetic allies at the offices of New Rochelle's Business Improvement District into giving up thousands of dollar in rental income. Or an entrepreneur who was prepared to spends $50,000 to build out a frumpy, decaying retail space in the heart of the downtown business district and put in brand new store selling high-tech communications equipment has been scared off from investing in New Rochelle.

HAPPY 40TH BIRTHDAY, MAYOR BRAMSON!

Dear Friends,

Sunday, December 13th is Mayor Noam Bramson’s 40th birthday. To celebrate the occasion, we are planning a party for friends and supporters. This event, a champagne brunch, will also serve as Noam’s first major fund-raiser in more than three years.

I am writing today to invite you to join the Host Committee for this celebration.

We can all agree that Noam has been an exceptional mayor, with a record of impressive achievement on priorities such as economic development, environmental sustainability, and community planning. Today, at a time
of particularly difficult economic and budgetary challenges, Noam’s thoughtful and responsive leadership inspires confidence throughout our city. He has earned our trust and enthusiastic support.

Host Committee Membership does not require any financial commitment.

Members receive an honorary listing in the brunch invitation and are simply asked to encourage friends, family, colleagues and neighbors to
attend.

The Journal News blog is reporting, Kathleen Gill has been named "acting" corporation counsel:

City Manager Charles Strome III today said he’ll name Shapiro’s deputy Kathleen Gill as her temporary replacement. Gill has been with the city since 1995.

“She’s been here a long time and she’s experienced,” Strome said.

I would encourage everyone to read the entire post, especially the funny part where Aman Ali pretends not to know that Shapiro was fired or why.

Of course, if you want the full story feel free to click on our original report which contains all the juicy details:

strome.jpgFacing further massive declines in revenues, City Manager Chuck Strome has entered into confidential discussions with the main unions in New Rochelle-- Police, Fire and DPW -- looking for givebacks on current contracts and threatening layoffs if the unions do not go along, sources tell Talk of the Sound. Strome has told union leaders the City can no longer honor its contractual obligations to City employees due to significant shortfalls in City revenue as a result of the economic downturn.

"The City has been meeting with the labor unions relative to the 2010 budget in an effort to work together to get through these difficult financial times," Strome told Talk of the Sound.

DSC_0585.jpgWith all the excitement last week over the board coup which saw Quay Watkins first take herself out of the running for school board president and then be defeated as a candidate for school board vice president, we set aside another highly significant event which took place at the Committee of the Whole meeting just minutes before the coup -- David Lacher grilling Schools Superintendent Richard Organisciak on the loopholes contained in the district's residency policy which, according to Lacher, provided a "road map" for parents to improperly place children from other school district in the New Rochelle schools.
