Original Avalon Environmental Study, Prepared by Bramson Campaign Donor, Underestimated Impact on Schools

August 31, 2009 - 20:45

In an effort to backtrack on his original claim that downtown development in New Rochelle has created a $2 million school surplus for the school district, Mayor Bramson and other New Rochelle politicians are now using the phrase "net increase" in the hopes of muddying the water. Readers will recall that when I originally challenged the Mayor on his claim during his radio show he abruptly ended the call and has not returned to his radio show or answered questions about this claim since. If his goal was to bury the issue, he has failed. Bramson rude, disrespectful behavior led me to investigate further and the Mayor is not going to like my publishing what I found.

Deidre Polow, the New Rochelle BoE and the "Making AYP" Charade

August 31, 2009 - 18:22

DSC_0554.jpgIn a previous article, Deidre Polow and the Significance of "Adequate Yearly Progress", I asked if readers could explain why Polow brandishes "AYP" like a jedi with a light saber, trying to convince residents that "making AYP" is some sort of significant achievement for her and her fellow Board of Education members. It is actually the exact opposite of what she claims.

Recently released data from New York State shows the full extent of the hollowness of her claims:

Schools making AYP in New York State: 89%
Schools making AYP in Westchester County: 93%
District making AYP in New York State: 95%

New Rochelle Has Its Own Share of Online Gang Activity

August 30, 2009 - 17:22

Word has finally got out about gang members uploading photos and videos to the web:

The videos of Hispanic gangsters calling themselves Vatos Locos de Yonkers Barrio St. Andrews and Downing St 203 Raza Loca de Yonkers were posted on the Web site in the past month - in the same period that some southwest Yonkers residents have complained of rising crime due to budget-induced reductions in police staffing.

This is hardly news and hardly confined to Yonkers. Sources have told Talk of the Sound about online gang activity by New Rochelle gang members for the past year.

Constitution Be Damned, New Rochelle School Board Takes First Steps Towards "Hebrew Immersion" Program in Fall 2010

August 30, 2009 - 01:18

1BD77F5A-D053-46DC-968F-FD22E4CF70A7.jpgProponents of creating a New Rochelle Hebrew Immersion Program came before the Board of Education on this past Tuesday to promote the idea of a Hebrew CILA Program in the New Rochelle Public Schools. The two leaders of the group, both New Rochelle residents, claimed to represent a small group of Orthodox Jews supposedly interested in offering children Hebrew language instruction. They came away with a commitment from the board to conduct a community survey to gauge support for Hebrew CILA.

The group's web site, however, reveals a very different purpose -- to help Orthodox Jewish families resolve the so-called "Jewish Day School Crisis" by offering these families a "Jewish Day School experience" without having to pay for it:

Forest City Blamed for Deaths in Housing Units as Unhealthy Conditions are Exposed by Watchdog Group

August 28, 2009 - 00:23

In a report from the Citizens United Against Corporate Corruption the Cleveland based developer Forest City Enterprises is being blamed for multiple deaths . CUACC shows pictures of mold contamination in over 30 properties either owned or managed by the developer. Among other accusations , Forest City is said to have used political influence at the congressional level to redirect investigation efforts and collusion with local politicians to suppress attempts to warn other residents of the potentially deadly problems . "Meanest corporation on the planet" , "very worst landlord in the country" , New York Press voted Bruce Ratner "villain of the year", asbestos litigation , insider trading , all very serious accusations . Similar stories and more come from the watchdog group Develop Don't Destroy Brooklyn and their reporting of the overbearing taxpayer subsidies, out of scale development , destruction of nearby communities and on and on . Good for New Rochelle ? You have to wonder about who will truly benefit from their latest version for New Rochelle's Echo Bay .
