NYC Data Mine is part of a national trend by state and local government to provide access to sets of data maintained by government departments to allow citizens to access and "mashup" data and for developers to build applications which harness the data.
The City of New York Data Mine increases the accessibility of public data generated by the various New York City agencies. As part of an initiative to improve the accessibility, transparency, and accountability of City government, this catalog supplies access to a repository of government-produced, machine-readable data sets.
The data sets are available in a variety of machine-readable formats and are refreshed when new data becomes available. Data is presented by category or by City agency. Descriptions of the data, the collection method, and other contextual material, called metadata, make the data sets easier to understand and use.
Anyone can use these data sets to participate in and improve government by conducting research and analysis or creating applications, thereby gaining a better understanding of the services provided by City agencies and improving the lives of citizens and the way in which government serves them.
We are very excited to announce the launch of our newest service, a customized version of a Helios Calendar for New Rochelle events. You can access the calendar directly or see a list of upcoming events in the center of the home page under "New Ro Calender".
This is a very cool subscription calendar service which offers much more than a simple list or calendar view of events, including:
These days many people are carrying iPhones, Blackberrys and other sorts of smart phones capable of surfing the web and sending/receiving email and this includes employees of the school district. The school district email software is Groupwise from Novell which supports the two primary email communication protocols, commonly known as "POP" and "IMAP".
POP or Post-Office Protocol is a one-way communication path. A device asks for data and pulls it from the mail servers. The only option left up the user is whether to leave a copy of the email message on the mail server or remove it. Other than that, any message read using POP will have no impact on the message left on the server. If you read a message from a device and then connect to the server directly the user will see that same message marked as "unread".
IMAP or Internet Message Access Protocol is a two-way communication path. Unlike with POP, devices "talk back" to the mail server and sync any changes automatically with IMAP.
