Latest Online Threat to Our Kids: Chat Roulette

February 24, 2010 - 13:29

Parents be warned. The latest fad among teens and pre-teens is "chat roulette", an online service that randomly matches users in video chats with other users around the world. The service, sure to be imitated, originates from the web site is presented as a "game" but is in practice treated more like a "dare" for children to see what sort of deviants might show up in their video chat.

The disclaimer on the home page should give absolutely no comfort to parents:

  • You have to be at least 16 years old to use our service
  • Chatroulette does not tolerate broadcasting obscene, offending, pornographic material and we will have to block users who violate these rules from using our service
  • Please use "Report inappropriate video" link to notify us about inappropriate content and we will take necessary steps

The service has no way to verify the age of the user or whether the user has a prior history as a sex offender and other than users "flagging" other users after-the-fact, no way to prevent any particular obscene use of the service.

New York State Audit Show Eye Surgery Center of Westchester Inflated Billings by $115,934, Fined $5,000

February 24, 2010 - 04:12

images.jpegEye Surgery Center of Westchester, located at 838 Pelhamdale in New Rochelle, N.Y. was one of six medical providers forced to reimburse the New York State Health Insurance Program a total of $2.4 million for inflated billings.

Eye Surgery Center of Westchester must pay back $115,934 and was fined $5,000.

Insurance and Financial Adviser News explains:

The inflated billings occurred when the providers charged the state for the cost of out-of-pocket fees, which were waived to attract patients who would not otherwise pay higher costs, according to officials. The claims were uncovered following audits by the New York State Comptroller’s Office, which regularly audits the NYSHIP program, administered by the state’s department of civil service through UnitedHealthcare. NYSHIP, which also goes by the name The Empire Plan, is the largest public-employer health insurance program in the nation outside of the federal government, providing coverage to more than 1.2 million current and former state and local government employees.

Klein Hosts Hudson Valley Budget Hearing

February 22, 2010 - 22:31

Dear Neighbor,
In an effort to ensure the Hudson Valley is fairly represented in all legislative matters before the Senate, I and eight other local Senators representing Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester Counties have formed the Hudson Valley Delegation – a bipartisan coalition to more effectively advocate for the needs and concerns of the residents, communities, organizations, and elected officials of the Hudson Valley.
The Governor recently presented the State Legislature with his proposed Executive Budget for the coming year (SFY 2010-11). The Hudson Valley Delegation is holding two hearings to examine the impact of this proposed budget on our District and on the Hudson Valley region as a whole. Given the tough fiscal and economic times our State continues to face, your input on the key matters impacting our region is more vital than ever. I would like to invite you to attend these hearings to voice your priorities, comments, and concerns on the issues of greatest importance to you in this year’s budget process.

Gulp! New Rochelle Residents Drowning in New Water Taxes, Fees and Assessments

February 22, 2010 - 15:53

images.jpegThought you had seen enough with the increasing City taxes, County Taxes, State Taxes and Federal Taxes and Cell Phone Taxes and Online Taxes and so on....?

If you don't like the 55% rate increase from United Water or the extra $875,000 they will bill to the City of New Rochelle for fire hydrants (which will then be passed on to you in the form of a tax increase or cut in services)...then you are really not going to like the $1,000 per household "Sewar Tax" assessment coming next.

That will mean an average increase for about $250 per year for water plus another grand for the sewars plus you share of the 850k in hydrant fees. So, figure about $1,500 just for water and sewar. Oh, and we get zero from the Stimulus package to deal with run-off related flooding in New Rochelle.
