Despite claims to the contrary by library officials, there has been a steady increase in the number of calls to the New Rochelle police department from the library over the past three years. Calls include reports of "serious incidents" such as burglary, larceny, assault, and one sex offense. Many of the calls are for "disruptive behavior" with many of the calls coming during after-school hours.

On January 24, 2010, the Journal News published an article by Ernie Garcia, New Rochelle, Yonkers libraries ramp up security. The article was based an investigation initiated by the newspaper after receiving complaints from workers in the Mount Vernon Public Library about violent incidents in November. The article, which we had praised at the time, makes the following points about the New Rochelle Public Library:

  • Library officials have increased security in the past year to manage disruptive patrons and crime.

The Armory Series - Proving How the City of New Rochelle Failed to Comply With the State Mandated Deed Restrictions

Yes indeed, the city, by its own admission, acknowledges their responsibility for maintaining the Armory.

The Armory was deeded to the city with the specific intention and requirement that" said premises shall be improved and maintained...". As you can see from thiscurrent screen shot of the official City of New Rochelle web site, the Property and Grounds Bureau, under the direction of the city engineer, is directly responsible for the maintenance of the Armory, among other buildings. Having said that, the obvious and purposeful neglect by current and previous administrations would be considered a breach of contract as defined by the legal and binding deed accepted between the City and State. Very little effort towards maintenance and control of the building and property would have, no doubt, prevented the current damages from developing.

To all downtown residents and bussiness owners the city of new Rochelle wants to change the parking rules for us. They want to start charging us to park after 6:00pm . They want the meters on the street to go till 11:00pm and the downtown lots (maple ave, prospect st,division st. Garage, libary lots, centre ave lot)24/7.So if you go to church on Sunday pay up ,if you dine downtown pay up,if you go visit mom & dad or grandparents on maple pay up,and I ask why is it only downtown why not city wide?? A bussiness owner on division st states that people are parking on that street all night long.I thought we had to move the cars by 4:00am?Do the bussiness owners have permits for there employees? If not where do they park maybe it's the bussiness owners and there employees taking up the spots on division st.This is bad news for residents and bussiness owners.please call your coucil member or mayor to say no to meter and lot extended hours.

February 16, 2010 - 21:13
