Who is Deborah Newborn and Why Did New Rochelle Really "Hire" a Sustainability Coordinator?

April 30, 2010 - 19:20

GreeNR-Large.jpgNew Rochelle Mayor Bramson recently announced the public release of the ICLEI inspired "Green R Sustainability Plan" -- a document drafted in secret, by unelected individuals, led by a group of outsiders connected with various groups connected directly or indirectly with ICLEI and the U.S. Green Building Council, created by the National Resource Council, which is, in turn, funded by The Tides Foundation. The U.S. Green Building Council is behind LEED certification. None of which they Mayor has bothered to explain. So, what else has he failed to explain?

The Green R document was uploaded to the City of New Rochelle web site where residents were directed to send comments to someone who may be unfamiliar to many New Rochelle residents, Deborah Newborn.

So, who is Deborah Newborn?

Mayor Bramson Cautions Against Undo Alarm, New Rochelle Crime Rate Still Low

April 30, 2010 - 00:20

Mayor.gifMayor Bramson has posted remarks on the Burglary Spree effecting the North End.

In recent months, a burglary ring has struck New Rochelle's north end and several nearby communities.

For those concerned, let me offer the following:

  • The NRPD has increased patrols and otherwise assigned resources to this priority, while also coordinating with other affected Departments in the region.
  • The NRPD's PACT unit has reached out to affected neighborhood associations to share information.
  • The PD advises residents to take common-sense action to secure their properties, particularly when they expect to be away for extended periods

While there is a distinct pattern of activity that requires and is receiving a focused response, the rate of burglary, like crime as a whole, is historically low. New Rochelle has recorded 51 burglaries so far this year (as of April 26.) This compares with 67 burglaries during the same period in 2009, and, if you can believe it, 427 burglaries in the same period back in 1981.

Happy Birthday! Jay Leno Born 60 Years Ago Today in New Rochelle

April 29, 2010 - 23:46

Jay Leno.jpgTonight Show host Jay Leno was born on this day in 1950 in New Rochelle, NY. Leno was raised in Andover, Massachusetts and doesn't appear to give a damn he was born in the Queen City. However, he was at about 2 AM on April 28.

A few Leno lines:

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime. Teach a man to create an artificial shortage of fish and he will eat steak.

The Supreme Court has ruled that they cannot have a nativity scene in Washington, D.C. This wasn't for any religious reasons. They couldn't find three wise men and a virgin.

I saw something stupid in the paper today - a new alarm clock that makes no noise. It's for people who don't like loud noises. Instead, it slowly hits you with light and gets brighter and brighter until you wake up. I already have one of's called a window.

The reason there are two senators for each state is so that one can be the designated driver.

Happy Birthday Jay!

Mayor Bramson Takes Calls on WVOX Regarding GreenNR Plan

April 29, 2010 - 18:41

Mayor.gifOn Tuesday April 27th Mayor Noam Bramson took three calls on WVOX with Bob Marrone to discuss the GreeNR Plan recently presented to the City Council.

The first from Talk of the Sound Managing Editor Robert Cox who asked the Mayor to comment on the fact that a large number of New Rochelle residents cannot read the GreeNR Plan because they do not read English or do not have access to the Internet (or both). They Mayor said that a copy of the plan was available at the library. When a listener checked, it was reported that there GreeNR Plan was not in the library. The Mayor later disputed this but did agree to put make sure there were several copies available at the library. Cox pointed out that in the Mayor's rather long monologue about the plan he did not mention any costs associated with the plan. The Mayor said the plan was about cost savings not costs.

Peggy Godfrey of the New Rochelle Reform Club asked about an element of the plan regarding "lateral lines", saying that replacing the lateral lines would appear to be a cost.

Dr. Stanley Smith of New Rochelle and Congresswoman Nita Lowey "All Smiles" After DC Office Visit

April 29, 2010 - 17:32

Nita Lowey - Stanely Smith.jpg

Did you know that a tooth can usually be saved if cared for properly and re-implanted within an hour? New Rochelle resident Dr. Stanley Smith does. He recently stopped by the office of Congresswoman Nita Lowey in Washington D.C. to share this and other information form the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons about their specialty medical practice.

With all those sharp partisan elbows being thrown around in our nation's Capital, Dr. Smith's advice may come in handy!

The AAOMS was holding it 10th Annual AAOMS Day on the Hill to spread the word and promote the month of April as "National Face Protection Month".

Help Dr. Smith get the word out.

What if you and some friends were playing an informal game of basketball and one of your friends was struck down by a hard jab to the mouth? Could you help? What if you were the one to fall face down, only to find blood pouring from your aching nose? Would any- one with you know basic first aid?

Teach Tolerance! Teach Peace!

April 29, 2010 - 17:29

A couple of days ago, I wrote an op-ed letter in the Journal News on the recently signed AZ law that will make all people of color a suspect class. The response to my letter online was impressive. The responders were uniquely intolerant, bigoted, and simply racist – full of anger. They wished that I would die, be deported, be de-naturalized or simply disappear for having the opportunity to morally stand up and speak out against this unjust law. The overwhelming response was mean-spirited and hurtful. I think in the first day, out of the 68 letters written, only one advocated compassion and tolerance (this writer got whacked too!). Welcome to America! Speak out against injustice and indifference. Live for a world as advocated by Dr. Martin Luther King and Cesar Chavez.

Arizona Immigration Law Violates Constitution, Guarantees Racial Profiling

By Mary Bauer, SPLC Legal Director

Arizona’s newly adopted immigration law is brazenly unconstitutional and will undoubtedly trample upon the civil rights of residents caught in its path.
