Westchester County Police Seize 1,000 Bags of "Hitman" Heroin Plus $9,000 Cash on Hutch near Weaver Street in New Rochelle

April 23, 2010 - 17:15

Heroin.jpgWestchester County Police arrested two persons Thursday afternoon and seized 1,000 small bags of heroin and more than $9,000 in cash following a traffic stop on the Hutchinson River Parkway in New Rochelle.

According to WCPD, Police Officer Steven Stromberg was patrolling the northbound Hutch near Weaver Street about 12:07 p.m. when he stopped a 2008 Dodge Avenger after observing a traffic violation. Stromberg determined that the car was a rental that was supposed to have been returned to the rental company on April 14. In addition, the driver had a suspended license.

Stromberg took the driver, Donnell Allick, 30, of New Haven, Conn., into custody and impounded the car. During an inventory search of the vehicle, the drugs and cash were found in a brown leather bag stored between the two front seats. A passenger in the vehicle, Sybil Gibbs, 30, of Bridgeport, Conn., was then placed under arrest as well.

Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriguez picked up a ground ball hit sharply by Kurt Suzuki of the Oakland A's, stepped on third base, turned and threw to Robinson Cano at second base who made a perfect pivot and throw to Nick Johnson at first base to complete a rare and extremely difficult 5-4-3 triple play.

More Coyote Sightings in New Rochelle; Sutton Manor on Echo Bay

April 22, 2010 - 20:58

coyote.jpgEarlier this month a resident of Sutton Manor in New Rochelle observed a coyote swimming from Five Islands Park to Sutton Manor. There have been additional coyote sightings over the past week -- usually in the morning. There have been Coyote sightings on Decatur Road and Farragut Circle.

These sightings come in the wake of numerous coyote sightings in Manhattan, Queens and, more recently, Westchester County. In January, a woman in Greenburg was viciously attacked by a coyote. Residents are warned to take care with small pets and children.

A few rules to remember:

  • Do not feed coyotes.
  • Keep pets on a short leash.
  • Yell or throw rocks to scare it away.
  • Don’t leave pet food and garbage outdoors.
  • Don’t leave pets alone outside.

Other suggestions:

  • Do not put out bird feed. The birdseed will attract rabbits, squirrels, mice and other small animals that coyotes like to prey on.

Davis School on Lockdown, Man in Fatigues, Flack Jacket Triggers Alert

April 22, 2010 - 19:01

weighted vest.jpgNew Rochelle Police and Scarsdale Police are coordinating a search of the area around Davis Elementary School after a 911 call reported a man in green fatigues wearing a flack jacket and black gloves walking on Grand Boulevard near Davis School.

No weapon observed.

Scarsdale DPW Workers tell police the person is known to jog in the area. jacket may be a weight jacket not a flack jacket.

Police resuming normal patrol.

Davis shool refuses to say whether lockdown is over. Central office says they have no information. if a parent can call over and find out let me know.

When my daughter came home today from Ward School she told me they had a lockdown at Ward. As school is now out presumably the lockdown is over.

School District sent out a RoboCall to Ward and Davis Parents: mp3 file of call.

New Jersey Voters Lead Revolt Against Ever Increasing School Taxes

April 22, 2010 - 17:19

The Wall Street Journal is calling Tuesday's school election results in New Jersey a "populist revolt" and a sign of "the backlash to come in California, New York and other states". New Jersey voters defeated 315 of 537, or 59%, of budgets on the ballot this week.

New Jersey Rebellion/A school budget revolt at the polls ($)

In a typical year, more than 70% of school budgets are approved; the last time voters rejected a majority was 1976. As remarkable was turnout, which was way up Tuesday, rivaling Presidential elections in some counties. Overall, 24% of registered voters turned out, up from 13.4% last year. According to New Jersey School Boards Association data, turnout hadn't topped 18.6% in 27 years.

New Rochelle is cutting the budget this year. The Board of Education is making much of the unprecedented cut and laying of 75 employees but taxes are projected to go up 3.8%, 19% more than last year's projected 3.2% increase.

Ignored by City Hall, New Rochelle's Sycamore Park Neighborhood is Unsafe for Residents, Children

April 22, 2010 - 16:06

Sycamore Park.jpgWith many phone calls to the City Manager Charles Strome’s Office, Mayor Bramson’s Office and local City Council Representatives, it is now very clear that New Rochelle City Hall and all our Elected and Appointed City Officials Care NOT for our children’s safety or for the safety of most people in the South End of New Rochelle.

The Sycamore Park area of New Rochelle, located in the South End, has been plagued with serious on street parking issues, landscape company owners using residential zoned property to park and store commercial vehicles and equipment on their property, and above all speeding vehicles on the local narrow two-way streets.

Many Sycamore Park home owners and residents have complained about these and many other issues that have fallen on deaf ears within City Hall. The New Rochelle Police Department can only do so much; their hands are tied with the lack of cooperation from City Hall.
