Senator Klein Stabs New Rochelle Constituents in the Back

June 27, 2010 - 05:34

Klein0001.jpgAs co-chairperson of the Save Our Armory Committee I and our secretary Lorraine Pierce sat in Senator Klein’s office to garner his support to save the New Rochelle Armory. Without hesitation or a second thought, Senator Klein pledged his wholehearted support and a few days later memorialized his support in a letter dated October 25, 2006. Senator Klein states; “I am writing this letter in support of your group’s effort to save the New Rochelle Armory. The Armory is a site of significant historical importance to the City of New Rochelle and should be preserved”. Now, less than four years later, Senator Klein has stabbed his New Rochelle constituents in the back by co-sponsoring a bill with Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (S08307) which would allow Mayor Bramson “to sell, alienate and convey waterfront real property”. The Armory is not mentioned by name but if you read the entire bill the coordinates include the Armory. This legislation comes on the same day (6/22) of the special election where Sheila Marcotte, a republican, decisively defeated Greg Varian, a democrat, for Vito Pinto’s vacant county legislator seat.

TORA! TORA! TORA!: Mayor Launches Pearl Harbor Style Sneak Attack on New Rochelle Armory with Midnight Legislation in Albany

June 27, 2010 - 04:08

Mayor Bramson Rising Sun Flag.jpgWith the state government deadlocked in a budget battle as the legislative calendar draws to a close, Mayor Noam Bramson is working with the four state representatives of New Rochelle in Albany to sneak through last minute legislation authorizing the City of New Rochelle to tear down the Naval Armory in New Rochelle.

State Senator Jeff Klein and State Senator Suzi Oppenheimer have co-sponsored bill S8307 in the New York Senate. State Assembly Representative Amy Paulin and State Assembly Representative George Latimer sponsored bill A11554. The bills are identical and are summarized on the New York State Assembly web site as follows:

Authorizes the city of New Rochelle to sell, alienate and convey waterfront real property. [NOTE: The full bill is published below]

The Mayor plans to call a special meeting of the City Council this week to pass a resolution acting on the two bills, if passed, to immediately authorize the imminent destruction of the Armory, sources say.

LeCount Avenue -- Property Condition photos

June 26, 2010 - 14:51

While out and about in downtown New Rochelle this morning, I snapped a few shots of the current condition of the LeCount Avenue buildings. I think that Capelli has until July 31st to improve the appearance. I will take a few follow up shots in early August to see how they do.

I always thought the apartment building above were handsome buildings. The windows on the first floor are boarded up with plywood, which I thought was not to code in NR.

UPDATE *** Scroll down for more photos, including photos of the murals in the NR post office.

Here are photos of the Standard Star building.

Here are photos of the post office in New Rochelle.

The mural below says "John Pell receives partial payment for 6000 acres"

Cohen Calls on Oppenheimer to Disavow Working Families Party and Reject Endorsement

June 26, 2010 - 14:23

WHITE PLAINS – Citing an ongoing federal investigation into the convoluted and secretive organizational structure and campaign practices of the Working Families Party (WFP), state Senate candidate Bob Cohen (R, I, C – 37th District) today called on incumbent Senator Oppenheimer to reject the Party’s endorsement. Cohen also said that the WFP’s big spending, anti-taxpayer agenda would do further damage to the weakened economy and a state government on the brink of financial collapse.

“If Senator Oppenheimer has any interest in reforming Albany and working toward lasting solutions to solve the state’s fiscal crisis, the first thing she needs to do is reject the endorsement of the Working Families Party,” said Cohen, who noted that the Senator has consistently run with the WFP endorsement in the past. “The Party is clearly standing in the way of reform and its radical, costly agenda would only add to the financial burdens already facing overtaxed New Yorkers.”

ODD CHOICE: Mayor Excuses IDA Audit by Comparing New Rochelle to Yonkers Where DOJ Investigates Bramson-Linked Developer

June 26, 2010 - 03:00

Mayor.gifDuring his radio show on Tuesday, Mayor Noam Bramson commented publicly for the first time on the findings of the Office of the State Comptroller (OSC) Audit of the New Rochelle Industrial Development Agency, first reported by Talk of the Sound.

To listen you can download the 3 minute audio file here (3.7 MB .mp3 file)

The Mayor said the OSC issues audits like this for IDA's all the time. He said they are often quite similar in their content and cited a "recent or contemporaneous" audit of the Yonkers IDA that had many of the same conclusions.

A check of the OSC web site shows there is no such recent audit of the Yonkers IDA.

The most recent audit of the Yonkers IDA was made public on February 23, 2009.

Gracious in Defeat, Varian Thanks Supporters, Discloses Unprecedented Lawn Sign Removal Agreement with Opponent

June 26, 2010 - 00:16

Greg Varian.jpgGreg Varian, Democratic Candidate for County District 10 wrote a gracious thank you note to supporters. In the note Varian reveals an interesting and positive development -- "an unprecedented non-partisan joint lawn sign removal agreement with my victorious opponent."

Good for him. Here is his note to supporters.

After two months of 18-hour days on the campaign trail, Wednesday was quite an adjustment. No train stations, or schedule from Wendy or Jeremy to follow, but still work: 500 lawn signs to remove and a zillion calls to make. I still haven’t cut my grass or quit smoking (I’m sure the Republicans will note my delay in executing those campaign promises if I run again). But I did initiate an unprecedented non-partisan joint lawn sign removal agreement with my victorious opponent. (Thank you Mitch, Eileen, Brian & John Filiberti for your prompt execution of same.)

And now a big thank-you for your tremendous campaign effort is a few days overdue.

Never having run for political office, I didn't know what to expect, and I don't know if I learned quickly enough what was needed from the candidate. But personally, I have no regrets. I made new friends, and deepened old relationships.
