Best of Westchester 2010.jpgWestchester Magazine has published their annual "Best of Westchester" edition for 2010. New Rochelle put in a strong showing in the "Food & Drink" and "Nightlife" categories but was otherwise shut out by the magazine's editors.

Don Coqui and Little Mexican Café were Editor's Picks in the Restaurant category (Don Coqui was also a "Reader's Choice"). Don Coqui was noted for its dancing and brining "A little bit of South Beach flavor" to Westchester. The magazine suggests giving the taco al pastor, a taco with chili-spiked pork roasted under a pineapple, a try at the Little Mexican Café which has previously been honored for Best Authentic Mexican Food (2004) and Best Margarita (2007).

Spectators Sports Bar was selected in the Nightlife category as "Best Out-of-Frat-House Experience" where "the co-eds are just as cute and the beer just as cheap" as you remember from your college days.

Send us your photos of "Summer in New Rochelle"

July 09, 2010 - 03:12

What does summer in New Rochelle mean to you? Is it Hudson Beach, Lincoln Pool, summer school, city hall or the library green? Is it the 30 bus or the HSBC bank? The golf course or the fresh market? Whether it is bicycle riding on Pinebrook or frying an egg on a sidewalk, we're looking for photos, taken this week or next, that illustrate the theme of summer in New Rochelle in 2010. We're looking for the places and the faces, the sights and the scenery, the local happenings.

We will take the best of the results and make a city slide show for posting here on Talk of the Sound. Photos accepted until July 30th. Email photos to Photo Editor and include where and when the photos were taken, how you want the photo credited and a short statement about the photo.

Developing a New Rochelle WiFi Coverage Map; Optimum WiFi Leads the Way

July 08, 2010 - 16:56

NewRoWiFi-small.jpgWith the proliferation of smart phones such as the Apple iPhones, Google's Android phones, HTC and many other such mobile computing devices that double as telephones, getting a strong, high-speed internet connection on the go has become more important than ever. There is nothing more frustrating than being stuck on a laggy AT&T 3G network when you need to pull up information quickly.

Where possible, WiFi is almost always the better, faster, more reliable service. But where and how to find out can be a mystery for some users. Talk of the Sound would like to help solve some of the mystery by building a WiFi map for New Rochelle but we are going to need some help from readers to develop the City's WiFi map.

Talk of the Sound hopes to use this article to introduce a crowd-sourcing effort to map WiFi hotspots in New Rochelle -- public and quasi-public (not unsecured private hotspots). We are putting up an initial map which makers Optimum WiFi hotspots and the BID's downtown WiFi network and hope readers will post comments or send emails with additional information.

NRPD Crime Data June 2010.jpgThe New Rochelle Police Department has all but ended the burglary problems that plagued the North End of New Rochelle earlier this year, recent crime data shows. After a six month period which saw more than two dozen attempted and completed burglaries, from late 2009 until March 2010, the police responded with stepped up patrols, deploying officers in unmarked markers, conducting license plate sweeps and other measures officials did not wish to disclosed. The result: june one successful burglary in New Rochelle's tony North End neighborhoods.

Talk of the Sound first broke the story of the burglary spree in April: Team of Burglars Plague North End of New Rochelle; 21 Burglaries, 4 Attempted in Past Six Months
