Channel 12 News is reporting that an autopsy by the Westchester County Medical Examiner has concluded that the body of James Drago, a Mount Vernon firefighter who took his boat out from the New Rochelle marina on June 26th, contained high levels of alcohol and PCP. Drago was reported missing on June 26th, 2010. His body was later found on Huly 4th near the Larchmont Shore Club.

The case took a bizarre twist when the woman who reported Drago missing was arrested in Rockland County on charges of looting the home of a friend who had recently died in a motorcycle accident. The connection between the Drago case and the Rockland case was first reported by Talk of the Sound.

The New Rochelle Fire Department aggressively put down a working fire at a boiler plant building at the Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle this evening. When the NRFD arrived, black smoke was billowing from the roof of the two-story structure. News helicopters from Channel 2 and Channel 7 hovered over head, capturing dramatic video of flames shooting through the roof.

After the fire was brought under control, Fire Commissioner Ray Kiernan said there were no injuries to fire fighters, hospital staff or patients. No patients were evacuated. Are Middle Schools in New Rochelle Adequately Preparing Students for High School?

October 18, 2010 - 21:30

When the New Rochelle Board of Education met on September 28, 2010 at Isaac E. Young Middle School to discuss the high school graduation rates, the definition of drop-out was requested.  Susan Yom clarified that all students are included as "still enrolled."  It was suggested the actual rate could be 2.6% or 4%.  It was mentioned that GED's (General Equivalency Diplomas) are included as "still enrolled" at New Rochelle High School. The Superintendent of Schools, Richard Organisciak, added, "You are obligated to keep a child until he or she is at least 17 years old."  However, the power point presentation on high school graduation rates titled, "Pathways to Graduation - Middle Schools." highlighted the much higher rate of students who had not graduated in four years.

Isaac E. Young Middle School: Depraved Indifference Cultural Epicenter of the of the City School District of New Rochelle

October 18, 2010 - 00:47

Anthony Bongo.jpgWe decided to create this post as compilation piece on the climate of depraved indifference ever present at Isaac E. Young Middle School. This culture is ignored and tolerated and by default fostered and promoted by the Board of Education of the City School District of New Rochelle. The culture at Isaac E. Young is such that it endangers the moral, physical, emotional and psychological safety of children and other members of its community. We decided to utilize the institutional history and perspective recorded on Talk of the Sound to discuss and highlight this point. Our approach is simply a layperson’s approach to this legal concept.

Dinner in New Rochelle

October 17, 2010 - 03:29

Tonight i made dinner plans in our great city at Posto 22 on division street.I walked over through the libary lots and the avalon lot.On my way i noticed two police cars in libary lot when i approached the cars the officers were not in them they were both out of there cars writing parking tickets there was at most 15 cars in the lot. This amazed me we need two police cars to write tickets in this lot? Are these police officers on a quoter are they told write or else? After dinner i walked down main street to see garbage pails overflowing cars doubled parked and not a police car in sight. When i came down lawton street and through the libary lot again guess what the police departments CIU truck was in this lot writing more tickets. There were two guys sitting on the wall drinking in plain view what a disgrace lets ticket the people who visit our city for dinner or a night out but let the bums hang out and drink.Good job New Rochelle. I just wish i had my camera but not to worry the next time i will and the powers to be will see it for themselves. By the way dinner was great i’m glad i walked because if i got a 25.00 ticket i would not dine again in this city.

Curb Your Enthusiasm

October 16, 2010 - 23:52

Over the last couple of years, there’s been a lot of sidewalk construction work in New Rochelle. Cut granite curbs are being installed by construction crews next to nice smooth new sidewalks.

The new curbs might be illegal.

I recall reading the voluminous construction code a couple of years ago and ran across a clause that said curbs must have a smooth rounded surface. The cut granite curbs are sharp and can ruin a car’s tires if the sidewall touches it – I know, it happened to me.

If the curbs being installed are in fact illegal, several questions need to be answered:
What should be done about this?
Who authorized their installation?
Why isn’t the NR code not being adhered to?

Only our local government can answer these questions.
