TALK OF THE SOUND EXCLUSIVE: ATF/FBI Files on Union Avenue Car Explosion in New Rochelle

November 30, 2010 - 15:04

Car Bomb in New Rochelle - 36.jpgTalk of the Sound was first on the scene last April 19th when an explosion rocked a West End neighborhood in what was initially considered by many in the press and the public to have been car bomb detonated on Union Avenue in New Rochelle. Police called the explosion an accident and dismissed concerns of a car bomb or any connection to organized crime. Police stated that there were no known prior threats against the car owner.

At a press conference the following day, police said they believed the explosion was caused by an air-fuel mixture being ignited when Francesco Perri, of Eastchester, the owner of the vehicle, lit a cigarette. A melted red plastic gasoline container was found at the scene which smelled like gasoline. The NRPD declined to comment further pending results of an analysis by the ATF Laboratory in Ammendale, MD. That analysis has since been completed and largely confirms the preliminary conclusions.

November 30, 2010 - 03:11

Last Monday night, November 22nd, Mayor Bramson invited neighbors to a community meeting at the colorful and beautiful offices of Cross Cultural Solutions at 2 Clinton Place. Cross Cultural Solutions offers programs where people can volunteer around the world. Their brochure says "With CCS, you can enjoy the flexibility of choosing from 12 countries, start dates year round, and programs from 1 to 12 weeks long." Their offices are filled with photographs, cultural artifacts, pottery and sculpture. To get upstairs, you walk up a wide staircase made of rough hewn logs.

A diverse group of approximately 45 locals met in a round open auditorium with three levels of platforms with chairs on them. The mayor stood at the bottom and the entrance and encouraged all to sign in. A large skylight was centered above the room, which was very warm.

AOL Patch Managing Editor Soft Pedals Plagiarism Incident with Talk of the Sound

November 30, 2010 - 02:10

Robert Hernandez of the Online Journalism Review has an article up which references the plagiarism issue where AOL Patch lifted material from Talk of the Sound and then lied about it: Patch's editor-in-chief answers all questions, evil or otherwise.

In terms of quality, the other negative criticism has been in the quality of journalism... which is subjective... but the concerns and allegations about plagiarism are valid... at least in two cases, [correct]? How do you address those concerns? Perhaps not failed Patches, but those are some significant issues, [are they not]?

Re: Suggested Amendments to 2011 Budget

Date: November 28, 2010

We have reviewed the proposed 2011 budget with the goals of minimizing the additional tax burden placed on residents, preserving essential core services, and safeguarding the City's long-term fiscal health and stability.

The following amendments are offered for your consideration. If adopted, they would cut the proposed tax rate for 2011 by 1.63%, from 3.90% to 2.27%, while also increasing the unappropriated fund balance by $350,000 to a total of almost $3,000,000. The year-to-year property tax levy would actually decline by $738,598 or 1.52%, a larger percentage reduction than that proposed by the County Executive. Our suggested amendments are first summarized below, with a more complete explanation of each following.
