Smoky Car Fire Shuts Down Main Street in Downtown New Rochelle

November 29, 2010 - 19:46

CarFire-482Main-KK-5.jpgA car fire on Main Street between Lawton Street and North Avenue near the Rainbow Fish Market at 382 Main Street shut down traffic on the busy thoroughfare for about an hour this afternoon as firefighters responded to the scene and quickly brought the fire under control. The fire filled the sky around Main Street and Lawton and was visible a half-mile away.

Below are photos from the scene taken by Robert Cox. Video shot by a local merchant using his iPhone. Some additional photos are being sent from a Blackberry; we will update when we get them.

In the video you can see the flames leaping up from the car. Below is a photo of the owner of the car who stood nearby and watched as her car burned and was then doused with water. She appeared to be uninjured and no ambulances were brought into the fire scene so it appears there were no injuries.

Reflections on a Thanksgiving Day Service in New Rochelle

November 29, 2010 - 11:33

Keep Ithaca always in your mind
Arriving there is what you are destined for.
But do not hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
So you are old by the time you reach the island,
Wealthy with all you have gained on the way,
Not expecting Ithaca to make you rich.
Ithaca gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you would not have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.
And if you find her poor, Ithaca won’t have fooled you.
Wise as you have become, so full of experience,
You will have understood by then what these Ithacas mean.

Antonios_Kireopoulos.jpgOn Thanksgiving Day, the Interreligious Council of New Rochelle held its annual Community Thanksgiving Service. The service rotates among the various congregations with this year’s service being held at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church at 10 Mill Road at the very northern extent of North Avenue. The service was broadcast live on WVOX-1460 AM with guest commentator Dino Yotides and will be telecast via tape delay on the local cable channel 75.

The Interreligious Council was founded in 1975 by Rabbi Amiel Wohl of Temple Israel, the late Rev. Peter Kyriakos of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, and the late Sister Dorothy Ann Kelly of the College of New Rochelle as a way to bridge divides in the rather diverse Queen City. The Thanksgiving service highlights its activities and the service has grown to encompass most of the religious institutions in New Rochelle.

Can There Be a Merry Christmas in Iraq and Afghanistan? YOU Can Help Make it Happen

November 29, 2010 - 07:59

Thanksgiving found many of us joining together with family and friends to celebrate and give thanks for what we have. In stark contrast to the comfort of our celebrating together, approximately 150,000 men and women currently serving in Afghanistan and Iraq will spend this Holiday season some 7,000 miles from home and separated from loved ones.

YOU can bring a little slice of home to those who serve just by helping out Jennie McFarland and the good folks over at "Operation Support Our Troops". With very little effort on your part, you can help make a connection with home and let the troops know we care. Keep in mind, we may call them the "troops", but they really are our sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, aunts, uncles and friends. Don't let their distance come between home and heart.

What Works for Community News Start Ups and How that Applies to New Rochelle's Talk of the Sound

November 28, 2010 - 23:05

KnightCitizenNewsNetwork.jpgOn the radio last week I spoke about a publication I received from Jan Schaefer at American Univeristy: J-Lab's New Voices Program: "What Works". New Voices is a program created five years ago to fund community news startups. Funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and J-Lab: The Institute for Interactive Journalism, the program awards small grants to seed the launch of innovative community news ventures in the United States and explore models for sustainability.

For readers interested to understand more about the thinking that informs Talk of the Sound you can learn a great deal from this report.

Gothamist Web Site Reports on a Turkey Heart Found at Glenwood Lake Park in New Rochelle

November 28, 2010 - 22:17

Gothamist_TurkeyHeart.jpgGothamist is reporting that a turkey heart was found on the ground at Glenwood Lake Park surrounded by a heart-shaped chalk outline.

While no judge of ritualistic killings, this seems a little too convenient and a little too staged. Convenient because there would be ready access to this particular animal part over the Thanksgiving weekend. Staged because someone just happened upon it and took pictures.

We shall see what the NRPD and SPCA has to say tomorrow and report back.
