2010 Christmas Message: Have Patience and Hope by Peggy Godfrey

The message of Christmas gives us all hope for the future and for a new year. Fair minded people want peace and also hope for a better world.. The hymns ring out everywhere and the stores of full of shoppers. But again this year many people have suffered job losses and financial setbacks. Some families can not even afford a festive meal or have any kind of celebration. There are military personnel who will not be able to celebrate with their family and friends.

GOP County Legislators Blast Democratic Majority for Overrides of Budget Vetoes

December 24, 2010 - 18:51

White Plains, NY – Republican County Legislators criticized a “flawed process that led to a flawed product,” and blasted their Democratic counterparts for their strict adherence to party line votes to override virtually all of County Executive Rob Astorino’s vetoes.

“Too much of the budget process was done behind the closed doors of the Democratic caucus, and result was 247 vetoes and a blown opportunity to dramatically reform the county government. They made questionable decisions outside the review of the media, public and Republican legislators. Unfortunately, the Democrat majority voted to override several of the County Executive’s efforts to create a more taxpayer friendly budget, downsize the county government and create savings for the taxpayers of the county with highest property taxes in the nation,” said Minority Leader Jim Maisano (R, New Rochelle).

Tough Fire at 105 Lincoln Avenue Challenges New Rochelle Fire Department, 2 Residents Escape, 8 Firefighters Injured

December 24, 2010 - 07:45

An elderly homeowner and a friend escaped from a burning house on Lincoln Avenue in New Rochelle this evening. Marjorie Williams, 87, the home owner, was in the house with a second person. The two refused medical attention. Williams lives in the home with her daughter and son-in-law who are away on holiday out of the country. They are expected to return Sunday.

The fire at 105 Lincoln Avenue, a single-family house located between two apartment buildings, may have been started by an electric space heater. The house, located at the intersection of Prince Street across from Lincoln Park, was badly gutted.

As the fire raged, the house was engulfed in flame. Black smoke poured from the building, billowing out onto Lincoln Avenue and across the street into the park.

Astorino Blasts Democrats for Veto Overrides

December 23, 2010 - 23:13

Dec. 23, 2010 -- County Executive Robert P. Astorino today slammed the Democratic-majority of the Board of Legislators for overriding hundreds of budget vetoes, thereby adopting a 2011 budget filled with runaway spending and speculative revenues.

"The Democrats on the board went on a spending spree this month," Astorino said, "Next month the bills will start coming in. The Democrats have decided to put the bill on the taxpayer's credit card. But make no mistake. The bill has to be paid and it can't be paid with phony revenues. This budget by the Democrats is government by gimmicks."

Astorino in November had proposed a spending plan for next year that cut the county levy by 1 percent, protected the county's most needy, continued all essential services and protected the county's three AAA bond ratings.

After the legislators adopted a 2011 operating budget that restored millions of dollars in funding, Astorino used his line-item authority last week to veto $33.5 million in spending . The board Thursday overrode most of Astorino's vetoes, restoring $32 million in spending, over the objections of the board's five Republicans in most every case.
