2010 Census Report, Due Out Tuesday, Expected to Contain Bad News for New York State -- Loss of Two House Seats

December 20, 2010 - 12:06

The Associated Press is reporting:

The 2010 census report is coming out Tuesday. Experts expect it will show an increased shift from northern states to the south and southwest.

The biggest gainer will be Texas, a GOP-dominated state expected to gain up to four new House seats, for a total of 36. The chief losers - New York and Ohio, each projected by nongovernment analysts to lose two seats - were carried by Obama in 2008 and are typical of states in the Northeast and Midwest that are declining in political influence.

The Zen of Paella & Incoming Tide; Year-end review

December 19, 2010 - 21:05

…cooking Paella is very much like producing on the Incoming Tide. Having cooked a variety of paella’s (see photo), I blend ingredients creating complex flavors with aromatic intensity. In comparison, Incoming Tide’s 2010 season produced multiple productions infused with ingredients ranging from art exhibits and live performances, stimulating the cultural senses of its local community. Yummy Paella – enjoyable entertainment!

Quick aside, my prior post stated that this post was a preview of 2011, The Year of the BHAG. I decided to post that blog closer to January 1st…and thanks for all of your kind comments about the blog.

Which ingredients work best? Hmmm…so we began the inaugural season thinking of how to draw local audiences to our brand of entertainment…final decision, offer performing and visual arts projects. By the way, our mission statement reads, ‘connecting you to performances that keep you coming back for more.’

After 60 Years as Westchester's Toy Store, Big Top Coming Down For Good in New Rochelle

December 19, 2010 - 03:11

BigTopClosing - 04.jpg

Steve Rotker, a New Rochelle resident, got his start in the toy business sweeping floors and stocking shelves for his father Marty Rotker who, with a partner, opened the first Big Top store in Eastchester 60 years ago. His recent decision to close the last remaining Big Top owned by the Rotker family was not easy. Three years ago, with his lease up at the Wykagyl Shopping area, Rotker made one last go of it at the new but smaller location at the Quaker Ridge Shopping Mall but the store was never the same.

"The new store was half the size and was never really quite the same store," Rokter told Talk of the Sound whistfully. "At the old store a mother could look through magazines while her kids went up and down the aisles looking at toys, we had racks and racks of greeting cards, at the new store there was just no room for that."

Over the past 60 years the Toys for Tots program has delivered hundreds of millions of toys to needy children.

IonaGlover.jpgThe streaking 7-3 Iona College Gaels men's basketball team will play the undefeated, nationally ranked Syracuse Orange at the Carrier Dome tonight at 7 PM. The game will present an opportunity to benchmark the progress the revitalized Gaels have made this season. It is only the second time Iona has played in the Carrier Dome, the last time being 27 years ago.

How big is this game? ESPN is giving Iona's Mike Glover the star treatment: Optimus Prime scores like a machine

Iona's Mike Glover is more than pretty good. Through the first 10 games of his Division I basketball career, the 6-foot-7, 215-pound forward -- the younger brother of former St. John's player Anthony Glover -- is averaging 22.1 points and 9.6 rebounds per game for the Gaels. His scoring averages ranks him No. 15 in the country.
