Iona Grad Lindsay Tolpa Shoots For Golden Goals

January 30, 2011 - 23:33

Twenty two year old New Rochelle resident Lindsay Tolpa will compete in this year’s New Golden Gloves Tournament. She represents the Main Street Boxing Club (310 Main Street, New Rochelle) in the 119 lb. division. While the above demographics appear routine, the story behind it is not.
Lindsay was born in Utica, N.Y., as were her parents. Her father is a mechanic with his own business, and her mother works as well. Lindsay did well in school, both scholastically and athletically. She concentrated on soccer and starred for the Coliseum Soccer Club, playing in tournaments across the country and in Europe. The highlight came when her team won a competition in Italy. She enrolled at Iona College in part to play on the soccer team. She gave up soccer in her sophomore year, graduating in May 2010 with an International Business major and a French minor.

Special Note to Boat Burglaries at New Rochelle Marina Last Year

January 30, 2011 - 21:31

Early last year a man with a boat at the New Rochelle marina came to a public meeting at the American Legion Hall to plead for help. He said there had been a series of burglaries of boats at the New Rochelle Marina. He said he had been a victim and many other boats had been burglarized. The person or persons involved left behind a mess including cigarettes and alcohol containers.

Talk of the Sound has developed information as to the identity of the persons responsible. As we have no standing to file a complaint, we are instead putting out the word that if you were a victim of a boat burglary last year please contact us so we can provide you with information that might help in filing a complaint. The identity of this person is known to people who work at the Marina.

Sitemeter496k.jpgTalk of the Sound all-time readership as of the morning of Sunday January 30th, stands just under 496,000. Given the current daily weekday readership of about 1,300 readers a day, the counter will tick from 499,999 to 500,000 on or about this coming Wednesday.

You can follow the count-up here: Sitemter.

The site was launched on September 1, 2008. Sitemeter tracks "unique visitors" where a "visit" as a series of page views by one person with no more than 30 minutes in between page views. As a very general rule of thumb, a "unique visitor" is somewhere between 60-80% of an actual person reading the site on a give day. So 1,300 "unique visitors" is about 780 to 1,040 human beings reading the site on a given weekday.

On a monthly basis, the site is now getting about 35,000 "unique visitors", more than double the amount one year ago. In January 2010, Talk of the Sound had 16,000 unique visitors. In January 2009, the site had 3,000 visitors.

pepperday 001

This postcard from 1913 shows the Pepperday Inn and Cottages…located at the corner of Main Street and Echo Ave. Mary Pepperday ran the place.  It was connected to the Beacon across the street (which is still there).. When the Thanhouser Film studios relocated to that area, many of the stars stayed there. It had great food, rooms and dancing. Current photo taken in 2008.
