In the last 12 months the demand for Hope Community Services and the Food Pantry services increased by 44%. There is an increase in women with children, entire families, and elderly clients on a fixed income. These are people who have never been to a soup kitchen or food pantry before. They are the newly unemployed, people whose unemployment benefits have run out, people whose hours have been cut. Many of these people are now being forced to choose between paying rent and buying food.

New Rochelle Police Department's "Operation City Sweeper" Cleans House with 45 Arrests for Crack, Heroin

At 5:20 AM Billy J. Wilson of New Rochelle was arrested at his residence on charges of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the 3rd degree. Arrests in Operation City Sweeper were underway.

Led by Sergeant Brian Fagan of the New Rochelle Police Special Investigations Unit, NRPD officers along with officers from the While Plains Police Department, Westchester County Police Department, Westchester County District Attorney Office and the Westchester County DEA Task Force began a series of arrests on charges ranging from Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th, a misdemeanor, to Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance 2nd, a felony.

45 people have been apprehended in New Rochelle so far (44 on Friday and one additional arrest made over the weekend, said New Rochelle police spokesman Captain Joseph Schaller. Not everyone arrested was among the list of 61 targets. Schaller said that some of those arrested happened to be at the location when the targeted suspects were arrested.

The police blotter for Friday lists 37 persons who were arrested and processed at New Rochelle police headquarters.

New Rochelle Thanksgiving Day Parade 2011

The New Rochelle Thanksgiving Day Parade kicked off today at North Avenue and Eastchester Road at 10:00 AM. Santa Claus was on hand.

The parade route ran down North Avenue to Main Street, and then turned right onto Main Street and ended by Maple Avenue. The reviewing stand was located on Main Street near Memorial Plaza.

New Rochelle Police SIU, WCPD, DEA Arrest 44 on Drug Trafficking, More to Come

Early this morning, search and arrest teams from the New Rochelle Police Department, assisted by investigators from the Westchester County Police Department and the Westchester County DEA Task Force, concluded a month’s long investigation into drug trafficking in the City of New Rochelle with the arrest of a large number of individuals involved in this drug trafficking activity.

Currently, 44 individuals are in custody on charges ranging from Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th (A/Misd) to Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance 2nd (A/Felony). The operation is continuing and several more arrests are expected.

Starting in February 2011, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) began several undercover cases throughout the City of New Rochelle in conjunction with the Westchester County Department of Public Safety Narcotics Unit. The investigations focused on street sales and mid-level dealings which were starting to proliferate, particularly in the central part of the City.

Roberto LopezThe Westchester County Fair Campaign Practices Committee has ruled that material in a campaign mailer sent by Roberto Lopez in his District 1 race against New Rochelle Council Member Louis Trangucci was "false and misleading"

Trangucci filed a complaint stating that a campaign mailing by Roberto Lopez misrepresented that Mr. Trangucci "put developers’ profits ahead of the people". The Committee determined the material in the campaign mailer to be false and misleading because Mr. Trangucci’s votes on the legislation in question did not reflect support for developers or for developers’ profits.

New Rochelle Firefighters Set to Boycott New Rochelle Thanksgiving Day Parade

ThanksgivingParade2010Members of UFFA Local 273, the union of New Rochelle's firefighters have announced they will not march in the annual New Rochelle Thanksgiving Day Parade on Saturday November 19th. The decision to boycott the parade came after City Manager Charles B. Strome announced significant staff reductions include 6 firefighters.

"Due to the drastic measures the city has implemented, UFFA will not participate," said union President Byron Gray.

Gray said firefighters will have a presence at the parade, standing along the parade route with citizens, but will not be protesting.

Referring to the closing of Ladder 12 on Thursday and plans to cut 6 firefighters in the 2012 budget, Gray said the boycott was the result of a "severe decision" which he says has had a tremendous effect on morale throughout the ranks of the department.
