Reporters Notebook: December 12, 2011

December 12, 2011 - 16:55

Under New Rochelle Board of Education Resolution 12-180-9 Martin Freiman, the racist janitor, has again been moved, this time to Ward Elementary School.

Charlie Planz has been hired as a temporary Assistant Principal at Trinity Elementary School. Why they need someone there for the next three weeks when they have had no one since Pacheco resigned on October 14th is a mystery. A reasonable guess is that Planz is from Long Island, part of the Organisciak "mafia" looking to collect a little easy scratch for the holidays. Meanwhile, according to the HR director Raza Kholifar, Trinity Principal Bricenio has put together a site-based team to evaluate 9 candidates for the open AP position. 3 of the 9 were to be forwarded to Organisciak for review.

There is some sort of Civics Event scheduled for New Rochelle High School where Westchester County Clerk Tim Idoni will preside. As the New Rochelle Board of Education refuses to allow it, Talk of the Sound will not cover the event.

Garbage Truck Inspection Sticker 2Two New Rochelle garbage trucks are in service despite expired New York State inspection stickers. Some drivers are refusing to drive the trucks for feat of being ticketed. Under New York State law the operator of the vehicle, not the owner, is charged for operating a vehicle without a valid inspection sticker.

Garbage truck 55 and 56 both have expired inspection stickers.

They have not been inspected because the vehicles would not pass inspection, sources say. There are a number of other DPW vehicles that have valid inspection stickers but would not pass inspection either, according to these same sources.

London's Sunday Telegraph Reports on Talk of the Sound Story on Democrats Wooing Chelsea Clinton for Congressional Run

December 12, 2011 - 13:43

Philip Sherwell has a profile of Chelsea Clinton in the Sunday Telegraph, a major newspaper in the U.K.: Media-shy Chelsea Clinton explains her new role as television journalist for one of America's biggest networks

Sherwell interviewed me last week for the article based on our report that Democrats in Albany had approached Chelsea about running for Congress.

In a country where political dynasties are commonplace, it has not been lost on some Democrat strategists that there will be no Clinton holding public office for first time in three decades when, as expected, Hillary steps down as secretary of state next year.

Another intriguing scenario has been discussed by some Democrats in New York - that she might be persuaded to run for Congress.

New Rochelle Board of Education Tables Resolution to Bring Bill Evans to Ward School for 6 Weeks

December 11, 2011 - 23:41

BillEvans ALMSThe New Rochelle Board of Education tabled a resolution at its December 6th meeting that would have brought Bill Evans, former Albert Leonard Middle School principal, back to New Rochelle early next week. A draft resolution the week before stated that Evans would fill in for the Assistant Principal at Ward Elementary School for 36 days. Kimberly Peluso will be out on parental leave from January 3, 2012 until March 16, 2012.

Some board members were uncomfortable with the generous pay package offered to Evans: $830 a day for 36 days or $29,880 which is just $20 below the maximum Evans could earn and still receive his full pension for 2012. On an annualized basis, $830 per day is $215,800 a year. These board members wanted to the district to find a less costly option to cover for Peluso.

New Rochelle Armory Mural Restoration Project: Part I

New Rochelle Armory Mural 3 010

In 2010, the City of New Rochelle selected a local company, Artistic F/X, to store and restore the 3 remaining murals from the New Rochelle Armory. The company is owned by Don Geyra, a member of the New Rochelle Municipal Arts Commission.

Talk of the Sound has had an opportunity to view the paintings which are being meticulously restored by Geyra. Some photos were provided by Geyra with others taken by Talk of the Sound contributor Jen Parente.

"The murals were coated in what appears to be spar varnish", said Geyra who has been removing tiny sections with solvents dabbed on q-tips. The largest mural, a tug boat with signal lights, is about 40 square feet and the work so far on just the one painting has taken over 9 months. Spar varnish is intended to use on a ship to protect wood from the effects of sea and weather. It is not typically used on paintings.

Removing the wood frame area around the edge of the Tug Boat mural (above) revealed the vibrant blue color underneath the spar varnish.
