New Rochelle Quietly Resumes Crime Mapping Program

February 29, 2012 - 22:06

CrimemappingFacebookNew Rochelle has quietly switched its crime map back on after a much publicized incident last March where the Mayor expressed shock the his police department had endorsed a web service that provided residents detailed information about crime in their neighborhoods.

There has been no announcement but Talk of the Sound has been monitoring New Rochelle crime data on crimemapping.com since December when the company announced on its Facebook page that the New Rochelle PD was live on its system. The data is a highly sanitized view of crime data and dramatically understates the level of activity in New Rochelle.

Talk of the Sound has partnered with SpotCrime.com for almost a year and publishes all crime data. In a sample period of one week, the City reported 15 incidents compared to over 250 in SpotCrime.

A View of Forest City - Politics Promises and Payoffs

Questions about the relationship between New Rochelle's administration and Echo Bay developer, Forest City Ratner, are nothing new to the readers of this site. The dichotomy of having one agenda for the public to witness and another "behind closed doors" agenda for the purpose of bypassing public witness of the procedure can only be characterized as self serving. Self serving for the developer, that is, and not, necessarily, for New Rochelle.

Can New Rochelle's Echo Bay Development Pass The Smell Test?

This ongoing debate concerning New Rochelle's "wonderful" opportunity to build luxury condos on prime waterfront property, where the city now houses it's D.P.W., brings this thought to mind: Could we all please get a little more real about this so called "prime waterfront" down there? I mean, are you kidding? From the satellite image below you can see the acres of prime mud flats at low-tide, which happens like clockwork twice a day. You couldn't get a rowboat out to the harbor from the end of the city's property. However, as you can see, you could easily walk from a parked city garbage truck to the dock at the end of Sutton Manor Rd. without getting your feet wet.

It's a tidal marsh lapping up against the rear of the city yard, if it's anything.

Ah yes, it's true. At high tide and from the proper angle looking exactly straight out past Tank Island, past Sedge Island, scanning over the masts and boats in the New Rochelle Harbor, one's eyes do come to rest on the horizon line of the Sound with Long Island in the distance.

HeroinBustUrsulineWestchester County Police seized more than a half a kilo of heroin and arrested two New York City men on Monday night following a traffic stop on North Avenue in New Rochelle.

Detectives David Minet and Joseph Berardi were on the northbound Hutchinson River Parkway in an unmarked car about 6:05 p.m. when they observed a 2011 Dodge Charger traveling over the speed limit near Webster Avenue. The vehicle exited at North Avenue and the detectives followed it off the highway and pulled it over near The Ursuline School.

When the detectives approached the car, they observed the passenger using his feet to try to hide a bag under his seat. A package containing 1.5 pounds of heroin was subsequently found in that bag.

The package of heroin has a street value of about $60,000 but would be worth much more when broken down into small envelopes for individual sale.

After Many Years, New Rochelle Board of Education Still Unable to Find Qualified Candidate for Six-Figure Director of Security Position

February 28, 2012 - 23:05

StromeProcopioOrganisciakBramson

After years of trying, the New Rochelle Board of Education has once again failed to identify a single person with a security background to take the six-figure position of Director of Security for the New Rochelle Public Schools.

The board tonight will consider Draft Resolution No. 12-243 to authorize Schools Superintendent Richard Organisciak to submit a waiver request for Bruce Daniele to the New York State Civil Service Commission Pursuant To Retirement And Social Security Law Section 211.

According to the resolution, joint recruitment efforts by the School District and the City of New Rochelle Civil Service Commission have failed to produce any other qualified candidates who are not also retirees who would require waivers pursuant to §211.
