Westchester County Legislators Wades into Abortion Protest Debate

KenJenkinsThe Westchester County Board of Legislators approved by a 10-7 party line vote the Reproductive Health Care Facilities Access law which allows abortion clinic personnel to make a police complaint on behalf of patients who are "having trouble getting through a crowd or demonstration". Democrats who wrote the law says the law "fills the gap between federal legislation and state legislation that is already in place".

Critics say the law was unnecessary, a political ploy and an affront to free speech. One called it a blatant attempt to arrest and bring lawsuits against pro-life advocates outside abortion clinics.

US News & World Report High School Rankings Offer Does of Reality for New Rochelle

Gold best high schools 2012U.S. News & World Report recently evaluated nearly 22,000 public high schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia. Schools were awarded gold, silver, or bronze medals based on state proficiency standards, how well they prepare students for college, and other factors. New Rochelle was not ranked.

Westchester Magazine Wine & Food Weekend Kicks Off Next Week: May 17 - 20

WestchesterMagazine W F 2012Westchester Magazine is once again hosting its spectacular Food & Wine Festival. The event has expanded this year into a four-day extravaganza, the largest gathering of Westchester’s restaurants at one event in one place in Westchester County’s history.

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino will be on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday May 17th. Joining Astorino will be Kevin Nunn, Director of the White Plains Business Improvement District, many other political and business dignitaries plus 23 local chefs including Peter Kelly, X20 Xaviars on the Hudson; Anthony Goncalves, 42 The Restaurant; Anthony Micari, BLT Steak; Eric Gabrynowicz, Restaurant North among others.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will open the first event in four-day series, “Burgers, BBQ and Beer Bash,” featuring weekend filled with 200 world-class wines, 100 top restaurants and 18 special events. The proceeds from the event will benefit The Westchester Coalition for the Hungry and Homeless.

New Rochelle Actor on NBC's Law and Order SVU Next Wednesday

RalphLucarelliLong-time New Rochelle resident Ralph Lucarrelli at Cozzerelli on The Sopranos will appear on NBC this coming Tuesday in the May 16th episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. The episode will air on Channel 4 at 10:00 p.m.

This will be Lucarrelli's 4th appearance on the long-running TV series. He appeared in 2003 ("Kip"), 2004 ("Gus") and 2007 ("Diner Owner #1"). He has also appeared on the original Law & Order show in 1999 ("Joseph Russo") and 2001 ("Frank").

Lucarrelli appeared in the HBO series The Sopranos as the owner of Cozzerelli's funeral home in two episodes in the Third Season (2001) and one episode in the Fifth Season (2004).

Many people like to say they support the troops. Here's a chance to show how. The organizers of the New Rochelle Memorial Day Parade are looking for a few good men, women and children.

The floats for the parade need to be pulled out of the Ward Acres Barn, dusted off and readied for the parade next week. If you can give an hour of your time, they would appreciate your stopping by at 10 AM to pitch in.

The Ward Acres Barn is accessible from a driveway on Quaker Ridge Road. The location is on the north side of Quaker Ridge Road between Sussex Road and Pinebrook Boulevard.

Astorino Invites Veterans, Service Members To Annual Tribute At Playland May 27

PlaylandDragonAttention veterans, service members – and their families: Come to Westchester County’s 5th annual Veterans Appreciation Day and Memorial Day Tribute at Playland, Sunday, May 27.

The event, sponsored by Westchester County, runs from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. The Westchester Police Emerald Society Pipe and Drum Corps will perform at the main gate at noon. At 1:30 p.m., County Executive Robert P. Astorino will deliver a tribute in memory of those who have lost their lives in defense of the United States. There will a helicopter and Osprey Flight demonstration provided by the U.S. Marine Corps at 2 p.m., weather permitting.

The barbecue is co-sponsored by Fordham University and The Generoso Pope Foundation.

New York Governor Cuomo at The College of New Rochelle to Announce New Legislation to Protect People with Disabilities

(New Rochelle, NY) -- New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo held a press conference at The College of New Rochelle on May 10, 2012 to announce ground-breaking legislation to protect people with special needs and disabilities.

More than 200 representatives of local community organizations, members of the CNR Community, press from all the major news outlets, and government officials filled the College’s Maura Ballroom for the event.

CNR President Judith Huntington welcomed the Governor, praising him for the legislation, which she said sets a “new standard of care and protection for our most vulnerable populations. This important legislation resonates with the mission at The College of New Rochelle which for more than 100 years has been committed to service and ensuring social justice for underserved populations.”

Obituary: Hugh C. Follen (1940 - 2012) - Marine, Vietnam Vet

Hugh C. Follen, a longtime resident of New Rochelle, died on May10, 2012. He was 71.

Hugh was born on November 28, 1940 in New Rochelle to the late Charles and Dorothy (Mellars) Follen. He served as a Sergeant in the US Marine Corp from 1963-1967. He served 2 years as a combat engineer in Viet Nam. He enjoyed building model trains and running the layout with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife the former Sylvia Celona whom he married on October 26, 1968: his children John (Elizabeth), Christopher (Trynia), Michael Pearce, Thomas Pearce and Lori (Stephen) Tange. He was a devoted and loving grandfather to Christopher, Madison, John Jr., Dean, Thomas Jr., Regina, Brittany, Justin and Simone. He is also survived by his brother William.

Visiting hours will be Friday 2-4 &7-9pm at Lloyd Maxcy and Sons Beauchamp Chapel 16 Shea Pl. New Rochelle, NY. A funeral Mass is scheduled for Saturday 9:30am at Holy Family Church. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
