New Rochelle Mayor Declares War on Veterans with Underhanded Armory Vote

September 20, 2012 - 04:43

tora-tora-tora.jpgNew Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson pushed through a party line 5-2 City Council vote to deny Veterans and other New Rochelle residents an opportunity to develop a performing arts center at the New Rochelle Naval Armory. Instead, Bramson awarded the rights to develop the property to a group planning to turn the facility into a combination fruit stand/restaurant. One member of the group selected by Bramson has close personal ties to the Mayor's wife, Katie Bramson.

The fruit stand/restaurant plan includes re-activating the dormant Nelstadt Concrete property as a truck depot for off-loading produce before sunrise 7 days a week, something that is sure to please residents of the neighboring Sutton Manor Association.

Ron Tocci, a veteran and former New York State Assemblyman, vowed to fight the Bramson-backed Good Profit group "tooth and nail".

Will New Rochelle City Council Approve This Cabaret?

September 17, 2012 - 00:00

On September 19, 2012, the New Rochelle City Council will vote on whether to grant the Sieto Ocho Sieto restaurant's application for a permit to operate a cabaret at its location on Pelham Road in the Food Town Shopping Center. The restaurant is located directly across the street from Willow Towers, an assisted living facility for seniors, and the United Hebrew Old Age Home. The permit would allow the restaurant to host up to 250 people with music and dancing as well as bar service into the wee hours of the night. Although the restaurant must comply with noise regulations and any negative impacts within 500 feet, the owners have been blatantly flaunting the law by operating as a cabaret without the necessary permit and not following valet parking rules. A public hearing was set only after the owners paid fines of $900 to the City for the violations. However, the fines were/are nominal and can be easily recouped in one night. The fines are not a sufficient deterrent for the restaurant to operate within the law.

Parking Problems In Downtown New Rochelle

September 16, 2012 - 04:34

Many people were waiting on line this afternoon as only one parking machine was in operation at one of the city's busiest parking lots. The New Rochelle development department put two new machines in the lot and only one worked, causing significant delays and inconvenience for people parking there.

UPDATE: More lines Monday at the library lot.

Statement from Byron Gray, New Rochelle Uniformed Fire Fighters Association President

September 14, 2012 - 21:28

Wednesday evening, the New Rochelle City Council voted unanimously to accept a $1 million grant from the federal Department of Homeland Security that will allow the city’s Fire Department to hire six new fire fighters at no cost to local taxpayers.

The grant is a very positive development for both public safety and taxpayers, as it will cover the salaries and benefits of the new firefighters for up to two years. With recruits expected to enter the academy in Valhalla in October, the new firefighters could be in the firehouses by early 2013.

On behalf of the members of the New Rochelle Fire Department, I would like to thank Mayor Bramson and members of the city council for their support in seeking the Homeland Security grant to increase fire fighter staffing. This is an important first step towards rebuilding and reversing the significant attrition of our Fire Department, which has seen its staffing cut by 15% since 2008.

Jefferson Elementary School on Lockdown; Police Activity on Weyman Avenue in New Rochelle

September 14, 2012 - 18:05

UPDATE: Call has been made. Manhunt for the chain snatcher is over. Police units are 10-2. Helicopter leaving. He got away. I did get some great photos of the bloodhound.

UPDATE: Incident has now reached the 6 hour mark. County bloodhound has been following a track for about an hour -- from New Rochelle near Mount Tom to Pelham golf course to Pelhamdale then back the other way. This seems like a lot of resources for a snatch and grab robbery.

UPDATE: Westchester County Helicopter on scene, above Pelham golf course. Two NRPD Captains and Police Commissioner on scene along with 20+ patrol cars, motorcycles, trucks from New Rochelle, Pelham, Pelham Manor, Westchester County.
