LATIMER MAIL PIECE "MAY BE THE MOST DISINGENUOUS IN WESTCHESTER COUNTY HISTORY": COHEN SPOKESMAN

Urges Political Historians to Seek a More Outrageous Attempt to Mislead Voters

Westchester--Sept. 27...Assemblyman George Latimer just sent Westchester voters a piece of mail in which he:
1) proclaims his opposition to the MTA Payroll Tax;
2) doctors a Journal News headline to suggest he favors the state's Property Tax Cap;
3) claims "no one has done more to lower our taxes than George Latimer;"
4) trumpets his efforts to fight unfunded mandates, and
5) claims to have cut property taxes 7.5% as a Westchester County legislator.

The problem with the mail piece, the campaign of successful small businessman and state senate candidate Bob Cohen noted, is that:

-- Mr. Latimer helped create the MTA Payroll Tax -- he voted for it;
-- Mr. Latimer voted against Governor Cuomo's Property Tax Cap;
-- No one running for office today has raised Westchester County property taxes more than Mr. Latimer;

Disturbing Actions by Debt Collection Attorneys -- Using Prosecutor Letterheads to Intimidate

September 27, 2012 - 15:35

I had to read the following article twice, which ran in The New York Times on September 15, 2012, because it was so troubling:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/16/business/in-prosecutors-debt-collector...

In a nutshell, debt collection attorneys are sending out letters - utilizing a prosecutor's letterhead - to people who have written bad checks. These letters threaten the consumers with jail time if they do not pay the amount of the bounced check, plus other large fees. Here is a link to an example of this kind of collection letter:
