Open Letter To Michael Blakeney Of Good Profit Accuses New Rochelle Mayor Of Environmental Racism

October 12, 2012 - 15:46

Talk of the Sound was sent a copy of a letter to Michael Blakeney, the Founder and Director of Good Profit, which we republish here with permission.

Good Day,

We understand that you were recently awarded rights to develop the New Rochelle Armory despite immense protestations from New Rochelle Veterans and an overwhelming populace of New Rochelleans. Please note that it is no reflection of your good intentions, but the malice and politically motivated initiative of the Mayor of New Rochelle.

Yesterday, hundreds of veterans and law enforcement supporters fully engulfed the New Rochelle City Council and showed their displeasure of the Mayor and some in the City Council. There has been no fair effort to be inclusive and the Mayor has driven his agenda and placed you in the middle of what is sure to be a challenging public relations nightmare for you in the near future.

The Mayor is a driven person who does not seek alliances and is divisive. In an effort to move the project full speed ahead, he will then move the Public Works Yard and all its sanitation vehicles to the west End of New Rochelle that is inhabited overwhelmingly by working class people of color.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Iona Preparatory School officially acquired Iona Grammar School today. Both schools were founded by the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers, but the schools had been operating as separate educational institutions since the 1970s. The acquisition of Iona Grammar School by Iona Prep will bring the strength of the Prep’s academic, athletic and extracurricular programs to the Iona Grammar School and form the strongest Catholic educational institution for young men in the region.

NEW YORK, NY -- Today Lambda Legal filed a federal lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on behalf of Joseph Teevan against Westchester County Department of Public Safety, its Commissioner, George Longworth, and other high-level officers. Against court orders, the police department released sealed information--including name, photo, town, and charges--about Teevan and at least 12 other men, who had been arrested weeks before in a sex sting operation, dubbed "Operation Overexposed," in Westchester's Saxon Woods Park.

New Rochelle Veteran Gives Moving Speech at City CounciL Meeting

October 12, 2012 - 14:36

Below is the text of a speech delivered Wednesday night to the City Council during Citizens to be Heard:

My name is James Murphy.

I am a 31 year member of New Rochelle Post 8 American Legion, a 15 year member of Maceo Bacon Post 2882, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a longtime officer of United Veterans Memorial and Patriotic Association.

I am also a founding member of the New Rochelle Save Our Armory Committee.

For 15 years I have worked with other New Rochelle Veterans and concerned citizens of our City to fight to preserve our
New York Naval Militia Armory, for conversion into a Memorial Community Center.

The one constant on City Council during that entire time has been the implacable opposition of Noam Bramson to preserving
the Armory, first as a City Council member and for the last six years as Mayor.

I have no conception of why the Mayor has been so determined not to work with the Veterans on a positive basis to convert the Armory into a building that would serve the needs of the public of New Rochelle, including those who served their country.

Civil Service Watch: Recent Hiring of New Rochelle Property Code Inspector May Have Involved Multiple Violations of NYS Law

At a recent meeting of the New Rochelle Civil Service Commission, Civil Service Administrator Ms. Y. Jeanett Medina inaccurately stated the circumstances of the recent hiring of a Property Code Inspector for the Building Department raising questions as whether the City of New Rochelle violated New York State law in filling the position this past summer.

At a September 28, 2012 meeting of the NRCSC, Medina advised the board of the probationary appointment of Mr. Kevin McKenna as a Property Code Inspector for the Building Department. She stated that Mr. McKenna was "originally appointed on July 30, 2012" from the lists and claims "he was taken off a list we have right now" and, for a third time, states that McKenna was "was taken off a list".

A review of records obtained by Talk of the Sound under the Freedom of Information Law does not indicate that McKenna was hired off a civil service list, a conclusion later confirmed by a senior administrative official appointed by New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson.

After realizing that 90% of the garbage generated in our schools is fully recyclable, I set out to identify just how much of our tax dollars are attached to that amount of garbage.

A quick look into the proposed budget for the upcoming school year revealed that the school district budgets

$120,000 for the mere dumping of garbage. (page 22/23)

Local Fiat Dealership Destroyed by Fire

A fire raged through a Fiat car dealership early Wednesday morning in Larchmont, shutting down a key portion of Boston Post Road and destroying the car dealership.

The blaze required the efforts of dozens of fire fighters from Larchmont and the neighboring New Rochelle and Mamaroneck Fire Departments.

Fiat of Larchmont – which markets itself as “the original Fiat and Abarth dealer” – began selling the Italian made cars in 1961 and has become a fixture in the local community.

New Rochelle’s Engine 21 and Ladder 12 responded to the request for mutual aid.

“When a fire of this magnitude strikes in our own or a neighboring community and can wipe out a business and the livelihoods of all its employees, it is critical that fire fighters rapidly contain it,” explained Byron Gray, president of the New Rochelle Uniformed Fire Fighters Association. “In this situation, fire fighters encountered vehicles on the dealership lot, all of which contained highly flammable materials including motor oil, fuel, plastics, rubber, cloth and various petroleum based synthetics, which can all make vehicle fires extremely hot, toxic and difficult to extinguish.”

IMG 4083As seen in this photo New Rochelle council members Rackman and Fertel could care less when Veterans and residents talk at citizens to be heard Wednesday night. When asked by a citizen if he was watching the Yankee game councilman Fertel said 'i wish was". Well Mr.Fertel remember you work for us the people of New Rochelle and the next time try listening to the people. If you two don't like your jobs then leave and if you don't have the common decency to listen to the people of New Rochelle and the Veterans that fought for your freedom then leave.
