New Rochelle Receives Major Education Grant

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The City School District of New Rochelle, in partnership with Southern Westchester BOCES and the Port Chester Public Schools, has been awarded the New York State Education Department’s Strengthening Teacher and Leader Effectiveness (STLE) Grant totaling $1,844,500.

The grant provides further professional development for New Rochelle teachers and school leaders.

Jakira Greaves, a senior at New Rochelle High School, died early this morning as a result of a severe asthmas attack.

New Rochelle High School Reginald Richardson made an announcement this morning that Greaves died at approximately 5 a.m. this morning.

While three areas for development were presented at the March 11, 2014 New Rochelle City Council meeting, emphasis by Commissioner of Development, Luiz Aragon, was placed on the development of the waterfront area. A power point presentation was given: (1) transit oriented development, (2) downtown development and (3) waterfront development., "Development opportunities," Aragon said, were highlighted.

I have been a fairly regular attendee at school board meetings ever since I became aware of the problems in regards to recycling and waste management in the schools.

I realized that democracy is a participation sport and that board members cannot be asked to know and control everything that is going on in our 250 million dollar school enterprise.
