Iona Gael's Laury Named Karl Malone Award Candidate

SPRINGFIELD, MA - Iona College men's basketball senior David Laury was named one of sixteen watch list members for the 2015 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award, given by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Named after Hall of Famer and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Karl Malone, the annual honor in its inaugural year recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men's college basketball. A national committee comprised of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 16 candidates.

Iona College's Economic Impact Totals As Much As $250 Million Annually for New York State

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Two new studies find that Iona College’s total annual economic impact is up to $250 million – on the state of New York, and particularly on the Westchester & Bronx Region.

The findings are from a study conducted by two Iona professors and another conducted on behalf of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities by the Center for Governmental Research.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- City Council Members Barry Fertel and Shari Rackman will host a Community Meeting for Districts 5 and 6 on Monday, February 23 at 7:30 PM at the Albert Leonard Middle School, 25 Gerada Lane, New Rochelle in the school auditorium. NEW YORK, NY -- ttorney General Eric T. Schneiderman today announced the conviction and sentencing of Paul D. Hurley and Portmarnock Restaurant Corp., d/b/a Desmond's Steakhouse & Grill, for failing to pay wages to workers who were hired at various stages during the opening of the 7th Avenue restaurant. Hurley and the corporation were each convicted of Failing to Pay Wages as an unclassified misdemeanor under Section 198-a(1) of the New York State Labor Law.

Mirage Diner Set for Demolition on Thursday

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Mirage Diner, a New Rochelle landmark for many years, is scheduled for demolition on Thursday. If all goes as planned, the destruction by grapple will commence Thursday at 5 a.m.

The City is requiring that the demolition on Thursday begin at 5 a.m. to mitigate traffic during the morning rush hour. Some of the equipment has already been pre-positioned. The City of New Rochelle will send out a reverse-911 call Wednesday if the demolition will proceed as planned.

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore announced that Juan Barragan-Reyes, 22, of 88 Horton Avenue, New Rochelle, New York was sentenced today to one to three years in prison on his October 2014 guilty plea to one count of Manslaughter in the Second Degree, a class “C” Felony, two counts of Vehicular Manslaughter in the Second Degree, class “D” Felonies, one count of Unlawfully Fleeing a Police Officer, a class “D” Felony, two counts of Driving While Intoxicated, class “A” Misdemeanors, one count of Reckless Driving, a class “A” Misdemeanor

Extreme Cold Weather Leads To Pipe Bursting in New Rochelle Public Library

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The New Rochelle Public Library is expected to re-open on Wednesday, February 18th after it was closed unexpectedly after a pipe burst as result of extreme cold.

The building was closed because a burst pipe was discovered early in the morning. Although no materials or equipment were damaged, flooding did impact the library’s meeting room and theater.  The repairs are expected to take at least several days.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY --  -- Mercedes-Benz is sending members of an Accident Investigation team to evaluate the vehicle which caused the Metro-North train crash in Valhalla, NY, according to sources familiar with the investigation.

Donna Boland, a spokesperson for Mercedes-Benz USA, denied reports that the a special investigations team out of Stuttgart, Germany had been dispatched to the United States.

This is Part VII in a Series.

I want to shift focus away from Buildings & Grounds over to School Security for a bit. For many years, I have been calling for a “security audit” to evaluate all aspects of how school security is run. It took the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School for the district to act. They hired Vigilant Resources International to evaluate all aspects of school security in New Rochelle. What they found is what I had been writing about and talking about for years.

First and foremost, there is the issue of posture; inward-facing or outward-facing.
