Iona's David Laury Named Finalist for Karl Malone Award

NEW ROCHELLE, NY- Iona College senior forward David Laury is among five finalists for the Karl Malone Award, awarded by the Naismith Basketbal Hall of Fame and given to the nation's top power forward. Laury has been nominated for his outstanding performance in 2014-15 which included a MAAC Player of the Year award.

Iona Track Stars Avery, Clarke Race for Great Britain in Prague

PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC- Iona College junior Kate Avery and graduate student Rosie Clarke competed in Prague at the 2015 European Indoor Track Championships for their native Great Britain this past weekend.

Avery competed in the 3,000 meter race, finishing 13th in the qualifying round with a time of 9:05.14. Her finish was short of qualifying for the final race by one spot. Russia's Yelena Korobkina took the gold in 8:47.62 in the final race.

BOSTON, MA -  Junior Andrew Kowalsky's third place finish in the 5,000-meter event led the Iona College men's indoor track team at the 2015 ECAC Indoor Track and Field Championships at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center this weekend.

Kowalsky earned the bronze medal in the 5k crossing the line in 14:16.57. His teammate, sophomore Andrew Tario, finished fourth, just over two seconds later (14:18.94) in a personal best time. Rookies Johannes Motschmann (20th, 8:23.51) and Alex Carter (24th, 8:27.02) and sophomore Andy Adamovics (29th, 8:37.94) also competed in the event.

Navy Takes Doubleheader From Iona Baseball

ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Iona College baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Navy in non-conference action at Max Bishop Stadium. The Gaels fell 2-1 in the opener and 7-1 in the night cap.

Junior RHP Mariano Rivera pitched 5.1 innings allowing both runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts in the loss. Sophomore RHP Andrew Camiolo recorded the final two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Second Half Surge Leads Iona Women's Lacrosse To 16-12 Win Over St. Bonaventure

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Knotted at five at halftime, the Iona College lacrosse team found the net 11 times in the second half and picked up a 16-12 victory over St. Bonaventure University in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Mazzella Field.

The 11 goals tallied are the most scored in a period by the Gaels since an 11-goal second half in a 21-13 victory over Cincinnati on Mar. 17, 2012. The program record for goals in a period is 13, set on Mar. 10, 2010 in an 18-7 home victory over Long Island University.

Iona Women’s Water Polo Splits Two On First Day In California

RIVERSIDE, CA – After being behind or tied until late in the first half, the Iona women’s water polo team rallied with eight goals from freshman Hannah Schultz for a 15-9 win over Division III Occidental College in the opening match of the squad’s six-game annual California trip. After the victory, the Gaels team dropped a 13-5 decision at California Baptist University later in the evening.

Iona College Soccer Star Ignacio Maganto Signs With MLS' LA Galaxy

CARSON, CA – The LA Galaxy have signed former Iona College men's soccer standout and 2015 MLS SuperDraft pick Ignacio Maganto, the club announced today. He will join the club’s roster pending the reception of his P-1 Visa and will occupy an International roster spot. Per MLS and club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Ignacio had a strong preseason and showed his talent in our games and training sessions,” said Galaxy head coach and general manager Bruce Arena. “We are happy to add him to our roster and look forward to his development going forward.”

Shooting in New Rochelle Damages Two Cars, No Injuries Reported

New Rochelle Police are investigating a shooting incident at about 5 a.m. Friday morning on Morris Street not far from the intersection of North Avenue and Lincoln Avenue.

Shots were fired at two parked cars. Shell casings and bullet fragments were found at the scene.

The street has been a notorious haven for criminals over the years with drug arrests, shootings and summer block parents that draw a heavy police prescence.

No injuries were reported.
