NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The author of the book “Is Your Hair Made of Donuts?” and a rapper who sings the praises of fresh food were part of an in-school nutrition education campaign brought to the region by the Food Bank for Westchester—the county’s largest agency leading the charge against hunger — during the second annual Eat Healthy NY Day, held in three Westchester schools.

Monroe Men’s Basketball Team Heading To Nationals After Regional And District Wins

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Monroe College Men’s Basketball Team secured its spot in the NJCAA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship tournament with a win over in the District 3 Championship. The tournament will be held at Hutchison, KS held from March 17th to the 21st. This marks the teams return to the tournament for the first time since 2012.

The Mustangs defeated Baltimore City Community College 71-61 to win the District tournament in Baltimore last weekend.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Monroe women's basketball team is headed to the NJCAA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship tournament in Overland Park, KS held from March 17th to the 21st. This marks the 12th consecutive appearance in the national tournament by the Lady Mustangs.

The Monroe Women won the District N finals defeating Union County College 73-61 this past Sunday having previously secured the Region XV title.

FAYETTEVILLE, AR- Iona College women's indoor track junior Rosie Clarke will represent the Maroon & Gold at the 2015 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships this Friday and Saturday at the University of Arkansas’ Randal Tyson Track Center. Clarke competes in the women’s mile event.

Ursuline Students Attend Global Youth Summit in New York City

NEW YORK, NY -- On March 6th, 25 sophomores at The Ursuline School took part in a Global Youth Summit in New York City.

The theme of the Summit was Innovations in Global Health. The summit was organized by Global Concerns Classroom, an innovative global education program that seeks to raise awareness among U.S. youth about current international humanitarian issues and to empower young people to take meaningful action.  

Ursuline is piloting the Global Concerns Classroom curriculum this year.

New Rochelle Middle School Students Raise Money for Orphans

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Jane Moore, a student at Albert Leonard Middle School, spent her Winter Break in Haiti visiting an orphanage. Inspired by her visit, Moore organized a Bake Sale with three other ALMS students Brooke Rieger, Lexie Tym and Carly Rieger. The event raised more than $750 for the Worldwide Orphans Foundation.

Principal John Barnes joined in to help cut late-arriving baked goods.

The students are planning future fundraising events. They have set up accounts on Twitter and Instagram (@orphansarekids2)

Iona Prep Lower School Team Wins Westchester A Division Title

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Iona Prep Lower School eighth grade team topped St. Mary's, 50-32, on March 8th to win the Westchester County A Division.

The victory kept the Gaels a perfect 15-0 in winning Westchester's top division.

Iona Prep will head out to Staten Island this weekend to play St. Charles on Sunday, March 15, in a 2 p.m. semifinal. The game will take place at the CYO-MIV Community Center located at 6451 Hylan Blvd. in Staten Island.

The team’s success deepens Iona Prep’s standing as a perennial basketball powerhouse.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced its first Region Athletes and Coaches of the Year awards for the 2015 indoor track and field season, as voted by NJCAA coaches.

Assistant Track & Field coach Shirvon Greene, now in his eighth year at Monroe, was named the Atlantic Region's Assistant Coach of the Year in both the men's and women's categories.

BRONX, NY -- Elehecer "Eddie" Balaguer, a convicted felon, has admitted to the Bronx District Attorney, through his lawyer, that he was the person who aimed a green laser device into the cockpit of at least four planes as they approached New York’s LaGuardia Airport. Another man, residing at the same Coddington Avenue apartment, was falsely arrested Monday and charged with felony assault and reckless endangerment. 

Balaguer has agreed to surrender to authorities tomorrow.
