BID Receives $50K Grant Donation from Green Mountain “Sun Club” for Solar Energy Public Art Installation

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- A $50,000 grant to the City of New Rochelle’s Business Improvement District from the Green Mountain Energy “Sun Club” will light the way for a unique public art display in the center of the downtown, powered entirely by the sun. Joining Mayor Noam Bramson in making the announcement were City Councilman Ivar Hyden, Development Commissioner Luiz Aragon, BID Director Ralph DiBart and Tony Napolillo, Sun Club Program Manager for Green Mountain Energy.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Things were going well for the Monroe Mustangs men's basketball team in the first round of the NJCAA Division I National Championship on Tuesday afternoon in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Watched by a crowd that included some loyal Mustangs fans, the team undeniably brought the heat in the first half of the game, maintaining full control of the court. With five minutes on the clock, the Monroe men had secured a 20-4 lead over Trinity Valley Community College, and were capitalizing on every opportunity.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Merry Go Round Toy Discount Center announced this week that it will be closing its doors for good within the coming weeks. Signs were placed in the windows on Thursday.

Greg Choron, who has owned the 65-year old business for the past 28 years is retiring.

“It was a difficult decision to make to leave a thriving and wonderful business such as The Merry Go Round”, said Choron. “The time has come for me to retire and enjoy traveling.”

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- Alejandro Valdovinos-Diaz, 31, of New Rochelle, NY will be arraigned Monday in U.S. District Court in White Plains before United States Magistrate Judge Judith C. McCarthy on Monday March 23rd at 2:00 p.m. Valdovinos-Diaz is accused of trying to hire an undercover FBI agent to kill a man in Texas for $6,000.

Valdovinos-Diaz was arrested by the FBI in front of his apartment in New Rochelle on January 29th as the result of an undercover sting operation.

NEW YORK, NY -- Matt Ryan earned the state's top basketball honor from the Basketball Coaches Association of New York.

Ryan, the Iona Prep wing heading to Notre Dame in the fall, was selected Mr. New York Basketball.

The BCANY made the announcement Thursday morning. The selection process included voting for seniors by BCANY and media members as well as committee deliberations.

Iona Softball Completes Road Swing At Loyola Marymount

LOS ANGELES, CA — The Iona College softball team completed its last two non-conference games of their California tour. The Gaels dropped game one to Fairleigh Dickinson 7-5, before falling in game two against Loyola Marymount 2-0.

In the first of the doubleheader, Iona managed seven hits with two coming from senior Brianna Schauer, who went 2-4 at the plate, with three runs batted in. Sophomore Kristen Turner scored two runs, including a homer to left center with a run batted in. Senior Allison Hand and sophomore Ashlyn Morris scored a run apiece.
