Dump Truck Jumps Curb in 4 Vehicle Collision, Crashes into New Rochelle Tire Store

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- A dump truck swerved off the road on Main Street in New Rochelle, jumping a sidewalk and crashing into a tire store. No injuries were reported.

The driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle, striking the building at 24 East Main Street, the Mallory-Kotzen Tire store. Three other vehicles were damaged. A fire hydrant was struck and knocked over.

One neighbor said it sounded like a building collapsed.

MURDER IN NEW ROCHELLE: Medical Examiner Declares Death of Mexican Man in New Rochelle a Homicide

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Bronx County Medical Examiner today declared a homicide in the death of Juan Mendoza-Torres, 23, a Mexican man who moved to New Rochelle two months ago. This according to a New Rochelle official familiar with the case. Calls to the New York City Medical Examiner's office were not returned.

New Rochelle Police Detectives have been investigating Mendoza's death since an incident on March 28th.

DEC Reminds Anglers Of New Coastal Striped Bass Limits On Season Opening Day

ALBANY, NY -- The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today reminded anglers of the new striped bass limits, effective today, to comply with the Atlantic States Marine Fishery Commission’s (ASMFC) mandated 25-percent harvest reduction.

Thruway Authority Announces Overnight Lane Closures on New England Thruway In Both Directions Between Exit 16 And 15 on Tuesday, Wednesday Night

ALBANY, NY -- The Thruway Authority has announced that there will be overnight lane closures and brief stoppages in both directions on the New England Thruway (I-95) between exit 16 (New Rochelle – North Ave. – Cedar St.) and exit 15 (New Rochelle – US Route 1) for the removal of an existing sign structure, which is part of the $58.7 million I-95 New England Thruway concrete pavement restoration project.

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Iona College softball team swept both ends of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon on the road against Saint Peter's. Sophomore 1B Kristen Turner connected on four home runs on the day, including three in the 18-0 game one victory. The Gaels took game two by the score of 13-6.

New Rochelle, NY - The Board of Directors of New Rochelle Youth Lacrosse is honored to support and maintain the Eric Tutera Youth Lacrosse Scholarship Fund in memory of Eric's exemplary life as a scholar/athlete. Eric Tutera, played lacrosse for Pat Swift at NRHS He was a former captain of the New Rochelle High School lacrosse team. As a varsity player, Eric was the epitome of a team player. He was respected by his teammates, coaches and opposing players. Eric tragically passed away in an accident in the spring of 2008.

Over the last several months at Citizens to be Heard and to several Council Members and City Staff, I have said, The City of New Rochelle needs to do a better job of communicating what is going on in terms of Development and City related topics. The city needs to inform the citizens better, start a campaign for New Rochelle, what developing New Rochelle. Put out monthly a newsletter that comes from the city manager and development commissioner. A brand is a process not just a word, a brand must be built”.

Common Core/ Assessments - Do they "Matter"?

Take the tests, refuse the tests, will it matter to them, to me, to the schools, the teachers?  The decision making process can be overwhelming for many families across the region. No one wants to make a decision that would have a negative effect on their child's success in school. For many, the stress levels associated with these assessments seems needless especially when they are being told that it doesn't alter their grades.

With high stakes overtesting, does anybody win?
