NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The New Rochelle Chamber of Commerce will hold its Annual Dinner Dance on Thursday April 30th at The Davenport Country Club.

The event will take place at the Davenport starting at 6 PM with hors D'oeuvres, and open bar and a silent auction where we will be auctioning away an array of exciting items. The festive evening of fun and dancing with great food and and live music provided by Andrea & James Rohlehr and the AndJamBand.

Iona Rowing Hosts Three At Glen Island Park

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Iona College men’s and women’s rowing teams competed with Fairfield, Sarah Lawrence, and Sacred Heart at Glen Island Park on Sunday, Apr. 19.

On the women’s side, senior coxswain Mary Cain, senior Ashley Franko, juniors Nicole Barclay, Chloe Walker, Kaitlyn Ragolia, Devon McKinley, and Caitlin McGurran, freshmen Rachel Landock, and Serena Yanitelli took second, rowing the first Varsity 8 event in 7:44.83.

Iona Prep’s Jerome '16 named Westchester-Putnam Player of the Year

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Three weeks after being named MSG Varsity's All-Hudson Valley Player of the Year, Ty Jerome '16 earned the same honor from The Journal News as its Westchester-Putnam Player of the Year and First Team selection.

It was almost a clean sweep for the junior from Iona Prep, who finished second in the CHSAA Player of the Year voting. As with MSG Varsity, he was joined on the list by teammates Thomas Capuano '15 and Matthew Ryan '15.

Jerome has verbally committed to the University of Virginia.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Jordan Washington '15, Jonathan Lopez '15, Carter Graves '15 and Matt Sullivan '16 set a school record of 1:03.07 in the shuttle hurdle relay at the New York Relays the weekend of April 17-18, qualifying them for the New Balance National Championships in mid-June.

Coach Jan Mitchell said the quadruplet ran a "flawless" race with split times of 15.3, 15.9, 15.8 and 15.3. Washington also placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles, while Lopez and Graves recorded personal bests in the 400-meter hurdles.

Monroe College Baseball Moves Into Conference First Place

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Monroe College Baseball swept a doubleheader with Globe Institute of Technology.

The Mustangs took the first game 4-2. Monroe ace sophomore Alex Vargas threw six innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out seven and giving up a mere three hits. Sophomore Juan Arias got the save to close the game out and offensively, sophomore Hector Marmol went 1-for-2 with a two-RBI double.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY- The Iona College men’s rowing team took first place at the Spring Metropolitan Championships on Saturday, Apr. 18. 

Men’s Varsity Four saw freshman coxswain Bianca Mesqueue, senior Thomas Baik, juniors Ryan Dronzek and Brian Fairfield and sophomore Brandon O’Sullivan finish at 7:21.5, ahead of Geneseo, Rensselear, and both A and B teams from Stony Brook.

Dear Reader,

I have spent a good deal of my free time over the last two weeks driving throuhout the Northeast to help my son make a decision about college. The deadline is May 1st.

I just got back from the last tour late last night and there are no plans to visit any more colleges before my son makes his choice of where he intends to spend the next four years.

Folks may have noticed that I have been light on posting the past two weeks. This is why.

Elderly Man with Walker Pinned Under Work Van at Site of Deals Store in New Rochelle Dies

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- An elderly hispanic man, walking with the aide of a walker on a New Rochelle sidewalk, was struck by a white work van driven by Jeffery Strickler, 59, of Cicero, NY and died Tuesday.

The incident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. Strickler, a worker at the site of the new Deals store on North Avenue was backing out onto North Avenue when he struck the victim. Strickler told police he never saw the victim.

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- The Westchester County Board of Legislators (BOL) in partnership with County Executive Rob Astorino are poised to pass legislation at tonight’s BOL meeting which will save tax payers millions of dollars.  The two part initiative dissolves a 33 year old county energy agency which had outlived its function and creates an “executive level” position within county government that will ensure county operations follow best practices in regards to energy consumption and sustainability.
