Pocantico Hills Board Members Ignored Warnings Before Hiring Freddie Dean Smith

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- In 2008, an employee of the White Plains School District sent a letter to the Pocantico Hills Board of Education strenuously warning them against hiring Freddie Dean Smith as Superintendent of Schools. At the time, Smith was one of several candidates for the position.

Smith was hired about a month later but forced to resign amidst allegations of plagiarism. An investigation by the Journal News found that Smith had plagiarized about one-third of his doctoral dissertation at the University of Virginia which was subsequently revoked.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY- The Iona College women’s rowing team finished second overall in the Spring Metropolitan Championships on Saturday, Apr. 18.

Taking second in the Novice Four event were freshman coxswain Elise Tarrant, freshmen Rachel Landock, Serena Yanitelli, Katie Mulligan, and Brittany Quirino. The boat finished at 8:49.3, ahead of Geneseo’s A and B teams, Manhattan, and Hofstra.

Kirui, Allen Pace Outdoor Men’s Track At Virginia Challenge

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - Freshman Gilbert Kirui and sophomore Brandon Allen led the Iona College men's outdoor track team at the 2015 Virginia Challenge hosted by the University of Virginia. Kirui was fourth overall in the 5,000-meter event while Allen set a school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in his 14th place finish.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - Graduate student Rosie Clarke shattered a school record and led the Iona College women's outdoor track team at the 2015 Virginia Challenge hosted by the University of Virginia. Clarke was the top collegiate finisher in the 1,500-meter run.

Monroe Mustangs Track & Field Records Fall at Larry Ellis Invitational

PRINCETON, NJ -- The Mustangs track and field team traveled to Princeton University on Saturday for the Larry Ellis Invitational. The team broke a number of Monroe College track and field records.

Tresean Goodwin broke the Monroe men's 400m record with a time of 47.78 while finishing 4th in the event. Tresean's time qualified him for the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Championships and, later in the day, he also qualified for the 200m by running his season's best in 21.46.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY- The Iona College women's lacrosse team defeated Lafayette College 13-12 Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Mazzella Field. With the victory, the Gaels move to 7-9 on the 2015 campaign. Before the game, the team celebrated the program's four seniors: Casey Palmer, Blaire Nathanson, and captains Bernadette Gennaro and Meghan Testoni.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College softball team completed a perfect Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference weekend with a pair of victories over Manhattan Sunday afternoon at Donald E. Walsh Field.

In game one, the Gaels picked up a 7-6 victory in nine innings before taking game two 9-5. The two losses were the first for the Jaspers in league play this season, who entered the afternoon with a 10-0 league record.

In game one, redshirt sophomore Christine Costello gave Iona a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a triple to right center, scoring sophomore Ashlyn Morris.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Lady Mustangs registered two come-from-behind walk-off wins in a doubleheader against Briarcliffe College.

Between games, Monroe College honored seven sophomore players, Erin Bohan, Deniece Bent, Angie Lopez, Judith Rodriguez, Rebecca Demko, Idaysha Quinones, and Julia Toth.

All of the sophomores started the first game of the doubleheader, sparking a 7-6 Mustang win.

Mustangs Baseball Take Three of Five Games Against ASA Including a 10-Run Inning

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Monroe Mustangs baseball team faced regional rivals ASA College in a five-game home-and-home series over the weekend.

On Friday, the ASA Avengers took the first game, 9-6. In the second game, ASA was up 7-2 in the 7th before the Mustangs rallied with 10 runs in the 8th inning. Monroe held of a late rally by ASA to win 12-7.
