NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The City of New Rochelle Office for the Aging honored seventy-five volunteers at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon held April 15 at the Hugh A. Doyle Senior Center. Honored at the event were members of Foster Grandparent and Meals on Wheels Programs, Montefiore Sound Shore Hospital Volunteer Program, and the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP) of United Way of Westchester County.

This Weekend is Season Opener For Many Popular Warmwater Sportfish

ALBANY, NY -- The popular sport of freshwater sportfishing season for walleye, northern pike, pickerel and tiger muskellunge opens on May 2 in New York State, the Department of Environmental Conservation reminded anglers today. Saturday, May 2 also marks the opening of the special trophy black bass season on Lake Erie where an angler can keep one 20-inch or longer fish per day thru June 20.  Anglers can also take advantage of the black bass catch and release season now underway in many waters throughout the state.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The New Rochelle Public Library will present the annual “Sing Your Heart Out” culmination concert on Saturday, May 16th at 1:30 pm, in the Ossie Davis Theater. The free performance will feature ensemble and choral numbers by students who have been attending “Sing Your Heart Out” voice lessons at the library over the past several months.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle High School student Spenser White wants to increase awareness of the need for organ donation – especially eye donations.

“People don’t realize that even if they have a medical condition like heart trouble or cancer, they can still be eye donors,” said Spenser “because the corneas don’t have blood flow so they’re not affected by most diseases or health conditions.”

City of New Rochelle Celebrates Arbor Day

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The City of New Rochelle held a ceremonial tree planting in observance of Arbor Day on Friday, April 29 at Library Green Park. City and library officials and the City Arborist were joined by staff and students from Isaac E. Young Middle School National Junior Honor Society in planting a Kwanzan cherry tree. 

New Rochelle has been a Tree City for 22 years and was recognized on April 1, 2011 as being a Tree City USA Community for 2010 by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation /Division of Lands and Forests. 

Iona Baseball Swept by Rider in Doubleheader

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - The Iona College baseball team dropped a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Rider's Sonny Pittaro Field. The Broncs topped the Gaels 7-0 in the opener and 3-1 in the night cap.

Rider did most of its damage in game one in the sixth and seventh innings scoring six of its seven runs.

Junior SS Vinny DeMaria was 2-for-4 to lead the Gaels. Senior 1B Jimmy Guiliano, junior LF Travis Mistretta, sophomore DH Alex Beckett and freshman CF Jon Budesa each recorded hits.

Iona Women’s Water Polo Drops MAAC Semifinal Game Against Wagner

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY- The Iona College women’s water polo took on the Wagner Seahawks Saturday afternoon, in the 2015 MAAC Championship Semifinals. Despite aggressive play on both ends of the pool, the number-three seeded Iona women’s water polo team fell 18-12 to number-two seeded Wagner College.

Senior Jordan Carmody, junior Taylor Silva, junior Dana Andrea, and freshman Paige Neary led the Gaels (21-15) with two goals each.  Junior Rebecca Matthews, sophomore Rebecca Koshy, freshman Kayla Allen, and MAAC Rookie of the Year Hannah Schultz scored one goal each.

Iona Softball Sweeps Quinnipiac At Home

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Iona College softball team moved to 11-5 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play with a two game sweep of Quinnipiac Saturday afternoon at Donald E. Walsh Field. The Gaels have won each of their last eight league contests.

In game one, Iona rode the arm of starter Christine Costello to a 3-0 victory, before sophomore Kelsey Long provided the game winning run with a fourth inning home run in a 3-2 game two win.

New York State Assembly Members Support Chancellor Tisch, Push For The Elimination Of Nov. 15 Deadline Regarding Evaluation Plans

We fully support the step Chancellor Tisch has taken to provide districts with flexibility on the November 15th deadline. We recommend that the Regents go further and drop the November 15th deadline altogether and use September 1, 2016 as the deadline for school districts to fully implement new teacher and principal evaluation plans.
