Fried Defeats Rackman in Democratic Primary; Round Two of Fried v. Rackman Set for November

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Challenger Liz Fried handily defeated Incumbent Shari Rackman, by a two-to-one margin, in the Democratic Primary for District 6 in New Rochelle yesterday.

With 100% of Election Districts reporting, Fried had 489 votes 67% to Rackman’s 239 votes (33%).

NEW ROCHELLE, NY --The Iona College women's soccer team came up just short against the Towson Tigers, falling 1-0.

The Gaels outshot the Tigers in the contest, 14-12; however the lone goal was scored by Towson's Natalia Pinkney in the 68th minute. Marissa Green fed Pinkney with a long pass along the sideline, and the junior did the rest, chipping over the outstretched arms of Gaels goalkeeper, Lauren Ferris.

NEW YORK, NY --The Iona College golf team left Seven Oaks Golf Club placing sixth at the Colgate Invitational.  Iona finished with a count of 931 (+67) as a team, twenty strokes behind the winners, Youngstown State.

Iona entered the final day of the event tied for seventh place, and due in large part to strong final rounds from Kevin Kramarski and Brendan Kim, the Gaels were able to make a final push up the standings.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- A strong effort from the Monroe College defense keyed a come-from-behind, 29-20, season-opening win over Valley Forge Military Academy on Saturday in New Rochelle.  Tuzar Skipper, playing with a cast on his hand, led the team with 11 tackles and five sacks.

Offensively, the Mustangs had several standouts.  Starting tailback, Ryan Fulse, plodded his way to 48 yards on the ground.  He also scored a touchdown.  In the air, Devanta Barnfield had 113 receiving yards and a score, while Kyle Levere hauled in 85 receiving yards to complement a touchdown.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY --It took the Monroe men's soccer team nearly 110 minutes to finally get on the scoreboard, but a double-overtime, golden goal from Jaime Hinchcliffe lifted the #3 Mustangs to a 1-0 win and kept them undefeated on the season.  The team is now 2-0-1 in three games in 2015.

It was strong play along the back line that was the recipe for success on Saturday, as the defensive combination of Khadim Saye, Nicholas Haas, Abdi Said and Pedro Neto helped goalie, Joe Green earn his second clean sheet of the season.

NEW YORK, NY -- The Iona College men’s soccer program fell to Duke Saturday night by a 2-1 score.  The Gaels now stand 0-2-1 on the year.

The Gaels struck first when freshman Daniel Huerta scored his first goal of the season in the 17th minute.

The Blue Devils knotted the score at one apiece in the 27th minute with a header by Jeremy Ebobisse, assisted by Zach Mathers.

The score remained tied heading into the half.  The Maroon and Gold net minder Julian Petrello had six saves in the opening forty-five minutes to keep the Gaels in it.

Volleyball Competes In First Day Of Black Knight Invite

NEW YORK, NY -- The Iona College volleyball team dropped a pair of contests at the 2015 Black Knight Invitational. The Gaels fell in three sets to host Army West Point this morning and Cornell this afternoon.

In the opener, freshman OH Amanda Gannon led the Gaels with nine kills. She added five digs and a block. Junior MB Karly White added six kills and hit .308. Senior S Natalie Ziskin posted 11 assists and eight digs. Freshman libero Jessica Paolucci had 14 digs while freshman DS Kait Ferretti had a season-high 12 in the loss. Army won the match 25-21, 25-19, and 25-16.

NEW YORK, NY -- The Iona College golf team is tied for seventh place after day one of the Colgate Invitational at Seven Oaks Golf Club.  As a team, the Gaels shot 308 (+20), and are sitting 27 shots behind the leader, Youngstown State.

The leader for the Maroon and Gold has been Devin Delisle, shooting a 78 in round one, and an improved 76 on his second go around.  He is currently tied for 14th overall (+10), 11 shots behind leader Ryal Allison of Colgate (+1).
