WHITE PLAINS, NY --The Iona College volleyball team held off Holy Cross in five sets to earn a win in its 2015 season opener in its first contest at the Hampton Inn-vitational hosted by Bryant University. After dropping the first set (17-25), the Gaels won sets two (27-25) and three (25-20) and then lost a nail biter in set four (26-24). The Maroon & Gold closed out the match with a 15-9 set five win.

WHITE PLAINS, NY --The Iona College women's soccer team fell to NJIT 4-1 in non-conference action at Lubetkin Field. The Highlanders used a three-goal first half and held on to the early advantage.

NJIT scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the game to lead 2-0. Arianna Gerber's unassisted tally in the fifth minute and Neema Liverpool's volley finish off a cross from Jaclyn Ward in the seventh minute were the goals for the home team. Less than 20 minutes later, Noelle Batista scored from 25-yards out to make it 3-0.

WHITE PLAINS, NY --The lone goal in the contest between the Iona College men's soccer team and Radford came on a penalty kick in the Gaels 1-0 loss at the Fairfield Inn By Marriott JMU Invitational. The Highlanders' tally came in the 40th minute.

Jamie Summers knocked in his first goal of the year following an Iona foul in the penalty area.

Keeper Julian Petrello stopped the five other shots he faced. Radford's Aitor Pouseu Blanco stopped six shots in the win.

Radford took a 12-11 shot advantage while corners were even at 6-6.

NEW YORK, NY -- Governor Cuomo announced a crackdown on underage drinking and fake identification documents at summer concerts and other underage hotspots, which will last through Labor Day weekend. The enforcement will occur unannounced at various concert venues and places where young adults congregate across the state, and will be carried out by the Department of Motor Vehicles’ Division of Field Investigation in partnership with law enforcement agencies.

WHITE PLAINS, NY --Rev. Matthew H. Gates Rev. Matthew H. Gates, age 94, passed away peacefully on August 11th at the Witham Hospital in Lebanon, IN. "Matty", as his friends called him, spent many happy years as a resident of Sun City and the Seabrook. He was born in Albany N.Y, raised in Meriden CT, graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University and Yale University Divinity School. "Matty" was ordained as a minister in the United Methodist Church, New York Conference. He served parishes in Derby and Naugatuck, CT., and New Rochelle, NY.

WHITE PLAINS, NY --County Executive Robert P. Astorino invites the public to attend Westchester County’s 9/11 Memorial Ceremony in order to honor those whose lives were lost or forever changed by the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. The event will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, September 11 at “The Rising” at the Kensico Dam in Valhalla.

“Each year we come together as one community to remember the 111 Westchester residents and 12 former residents who lost their lives that tragic day,” Astorino said. “To some extent, time heals. But we can never forget.”
